Three capacity values appear there, Capacity is the full or total of the hard drive.

The Available number is a estimation of unused capacity (subject to temp file

swap, read-writes of virtual memory to hard drive, or application temp files) and

Used amount is hard drive used by the system, applications & associated files.

{image ^ from Disk Utility (use GO in finder menu, see Utilities folder) open D.U click on HDD

Hardware name, in text; this is not the same name of the Macintosh HD boot volume, above}

in bottom page, partition where the OS X is installed & your applications, etc exist}

This would vary if the main hard disk drive has more than one partition, in which

case those would appear as mount-points in the directory of the physical drive if

they contain a bootable system; some do not appear-- or are Invisible here.

The computer above info is from, has two internal 1-TB HDD & only one OS X.

Second drive is empty except for the formatting; ready for another system, or

perhaps extra storage. The formatting of the hard drive uses part of the drive

capacity, so info about the 'brand name' drive, shows higher number than the

second image where the content available (capacity) is less. This is natural.

Not sure if this helps.

Also, the discussion is about two years old...

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

Thank you, again, K. Shaffer. I believe I have enough room on my MacBook Pro (which I discovered is late 2009) because I was confusing "memory" with "Capacity."

As it is, my battery needs servicing and I find that my computer gets very hot and makes a lot of noise if I go to certain sites where there is a video running somewhere, e.g., online newspapers, AOL, etc. I probably should take my machine into Apple and have it serviced and have them download anything that it can take. I am going to back up my hard drive first and a friend recommended I get a Toshiba portable drive from Best Buy. I have Snow Leopard and I hope I don't kill my computer!

I don't want to sound too antediluvian, but I didn't grow up with computers!
