iTunes automatically starts playing when iPhone 5 (w iOS 7.0.2) is connected to car radio via an Apple cable

I'm using an iPhone 5 with iOS 7.0.2, regardless it is the most recent update

When I plug my phone into my car radio's USB port (Apple cable, not knock off) iTunes starts to play the very first song in my large iTunes library.

I plug into the USB port to charge it and to connect the phone to radio in order to use hands free audio.

I have tried two or three different cables, it happens with all cables and again all are actual Apple cables.

I do not recall this happening with iOs 6 or at least as much.

With iOs 7 it happens every f***ing 😠 time. Extremely annoying and dangerous (I may get so frustrated by this that one day I might just smash the phone or the car radio :-) to the equipment.

I have to unlock my phone, go to iTunes and pause or stop the song/iTunes. ➖➖

The app does not show as being open, that is why I have to go iTunes itself, the old fashioned way, so to speak. 😕

It sometimes happens when I plug my headset in (also Apple brand, the basic ones that come with the iPad and iPhones) to phone and have tried the two different ones I have. It only seems to happen if my phone is not in use (i.e. I am on a call and switch to the headset it does not happen)

Interestingly this issue with the headphones and iTunes automatically starting happened more with iOS 6 and than with iOS 7. Ironically the opposite is true with the car radio, USB port cable, charging and iPhone — it rarely happened with iOS 6.0 but with iOS 7.0 it always happens.

I cannot seem to find a fix here but I do see I am not the only one with this annoying issue.

Please someone (APPLE!) figure out a fix. ➕ℹ➕

PS I have even considered NOT having any of my music on my phone — none at all — which not only would solve the problem (I would hope!) but be extremely inconvenient and defeating the purpose of only having an iPhone vs an iPhone and an iPod.

PPS - I probably left out something really relevant, like what color is my car 😝, so if I did, please let me know.

Yes, but I don't want to delete my library or turn off cellular streaming. I keep a library of music so I have something to listen to when I am working out or on a plane and do not have good reception. I use cellular streaming to play media while riding in the car. I may not choose to play my music library at the time. Deleting the library and disabling cellular streaming is a band-aid, not a solution.

The workaround for my iPhone 6 is to be logged into iTunes when you want to autoplay the music and to logout when you don't. This removes all your songs from Apple music so there is nothing to play. This probably won't work if you've done a computer to phone transfer of a private music copection but works otherwise.

I also got so frustrated with this problem that I deleted all music from my iPhone and then also had to log my iPhone out of iTunes so it would not stream. I have a new Cadillac and their tech people don't know how to solve the problem so they, of course, blame Apple. I also, as others have reported, have had the same problem when using rental cars. why can't Apple solve this problem!!!!!!!

Hi Ken. Here is the cleanest workaround I've found. Firstly you don't have to log out of iTunes.

1. Remove all downloaded music. (You may not need to however that is what I did though). Streaming music is fine.

2. When car is started up. iPhone syncs to Bluetooth and starts autoplaying.

3. To stop the auto-play. Goto settings - cellular - and turn off play music off cellular data. This kills the streaming apply music and it doesn't start up again.

4. If you want to listen to music again. Turn back on 'stream music off cellular data. The music will play again but this time the auto-play is disabled. Not sure why this is. It seems to be a bug that thankfully wasn't fixed.

To summarize to turn off auto-play when driving. Do what you normally do, then turn off stream music off cellular data. To stop autoplay and then turn back on to listen to music.

The only drawback I find in this approach is this I lose control of fast forward and rewind through my sound system when I do it. But it's better than music playing all the time.

I have a 6 plus S and been searching for a way to fix this problem as well. It doesn't matter what you're listening to, if you plug it in (iheart radio, YouTube, audio book, etc.) itunes just takes over when you connect, this is so aggravating! And the fact that people have been complaining about this problem for a couple of years now, and still now REAL fix or response from apple for the problem, and it is a PROBLEM. Trying to listen to my school lectures on YouTube, I connect so as not to run down my battery and it starts playing the same song, which by the way I now hate. Thanks apple!

It's actually become maddening at this point! 6 plus S Smartphone?! 😠

A year of this ridiculousness is all I can take, I'm switching back to Samsung.

So is there a freaking answer to this Apple?? It is very annoying. I cant even use my car charger. the worst part is it wont stop playing. I can go to iTunes and hit the stop button but 5-8 seconds later the song starts playing again. So i am having the issue where I cant even get the music to stop playing until I literally unplug my phone. very annoying and renders my charger useless.

I removed all the music from my phone and I use Pandora. It's been awhile since I did that so I don't recall all the steps I took but once the music was gone so was the problem. As far as I'm concerned Apple Music is a rip-off. I can listen to Pandora for free and I play it when I want to, not when it automatically starts.

I'm not happy with Apple for what they did to screw up my music listening. All the music I had on my computer disappeared so I can't access it when Apple launched "Music".

SO I know this is old post but I needed to put my 2 cents in. When I plug in my new iPhone 7+ to my radio all of the sudden a Christmas radio station starts playing, with no music app open. When I open the music app it doesn't show anyt play and Christmas station is no where on my radio listings. Also I can't use the radio buttons to advance to next or go back to other things or else it automatically starts play Christmas music again. I've had this radio for 3 years and never had this issue until I updated my iPhone 6s+ to iOS 10, and I thought it was a fluke. But then I got the iPhone 7+ and it still happens! This just seems really weird to me so please let me know if you know what this is.

THank you

The other day this happened to me and in an attempt to see if there was an open program that was playing I either swiped up or double clicked on the home button. That brought a notification style pop up at the bottom of the screen showing that one of my streaming services was playing even though the program was not open. This seems to be something that might be intentional on Apple's part although I am not sure what the point of it would be. It is freaky when you dock your phone to play some music and something else starts playing.

This only seems to happen when the phone is docked, however. I have not had it happened when I plugged in your phones or when I've played something directly through the phone's speaker. So I wonder if there is something that happens when the phone is docked? Just fishing here. But who knows.
