I have backed up all of my files from my Dell and now ready to load on to my MacBook Pro. My external HD is a Toshiba and uses a USB port. MacBook recognizes the Toshiba and the files on it but not the types of files. I was expecting to open my regular documents and drag them on to my MacBook, but none of the files are recognizable.

Any recommendations?

When I right click for Get Info on one of the folders titled My Files, a new window opens with information subheadings:

Name & Extension

Sharing & Permissions

When I right click on the same folder and click on "Open" there are two files that appear:

File and Folder Backup.NBF

File and Folder Backup. CAL

Both are Unix Executable Files

I guess it needs to know what application to open up in. But if the files are word, excel, pics, etc., what is the best application? preferable free

It is not a FOLDER Attribute, but a FILE attribute you seek.

You can open Word files in:

• Textedit -- but that is not a good solution for production or modification of Word files

• Pages -- not quite free, but cheap

• LibreOffice, an Open Source Work-alike to Microsoft Office

• Office for the Mac (but does not meet the "cheap" criterion).
