can anyone help me out with this kernel report? I've got a lot of them in my log... but this is the most recent one (15min old). at first I noticed my amcbook rebooting when I had dropbox opened in the background, and whenever I went into the dropbox folder. I tried reinstalling it, didn't help, so I just unistalled all of it, and it seemed to make it better for some time, but a couple of days ago it started rebooting once again... this is that most recent report:

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.7.3)

    Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU

    If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.

    Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:

    Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):          com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff             dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000          com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(6.4.0)@0x83c05000->0x84019fff             dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000          com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000->0x8378dfff             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000

    Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…

    So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…

    Good luck,

    Clinton

    I've got no screen or video problems, it just shuts down every now and then... I get the screen of death and then it restarts. But that is still probably the faulty nvidia gpu, right? and besides trying to go o an apple store and hoping they'll be able to help is there anything else I can do?

    thank you so much for your quick response

  • 3. Re: mid 2010 15" i7 reboots by itself all the time. help
    clintonfrombirmingham Level 7 Level 7 (28,675 points)

    Yes, it's the faulty GPU problem that is causing your kernel panics.

    If you're within 3 years of purchase, Apple will replace the logic board free.

    If you're not within 3 years of purchase, the logic board replacement will not be free - you can, however, take you machine into your local Apple Store and get a diagnosis (print out a copy of your kernel panic and the Knowledge Base article) and estimate free. If they ask for some outrageous sum to repair the machine, ask about Apple's flat rate repair pricing scheme. You COULD be able to get a 'like-new' machine for less than $310USD.

    Note that some faulty logic boards are replaced with other faulty logic boards but you'll have a 90-day warranty on any repairs.

    Good luck,

    Clinton
