Connection to Computer

I am trying to update my iPod, and when I plug it in there is nothing happening it doesn't even charge. The only thing that happens is my computer makes the noise recognizing a USB has been plugged in. I'm assuming it is something with my computer seeing as how I have been having issues lately with it; and my chord for my iPod is new and works with wall charger. What is the possible issue going on?
