If your TV has a USB port you can try to connect your phone directly to it using the supplied USB cable. You should be able to view the Photos in the camera roll.
Otherwise a Digital Av adapter might work depending on the generation of iPhone you have.
I've found a LG TV Media Player, and Video Browse For LG Smart Tv in the store.

Other than that I now of now direct way to accomplish this without an Apple TV.
Phil; my wife's samsung galaxy 3 can stream here saved photos and video directly to the tv wi-fi. I want my newer iphone to be able to do the same thing withouot using cords or an intermediate device. Do you have a solution short of me paying $4.99 for an app called MediaStream?
I'm sure there are Apps form each TV maker for just such a purpose in the App store.
Other than that, I see no way to have an iPhone be compatible out of the box with every brand of smart Tv out there.
Samsung on the other hand very likely makes their phones compatible with their own TVs out of the box. Which would make sense if you have a Samsung TV.

There's an LG app in the App store that I have downloaded and used - it's an app that allows the iphone to be used as the TV remote only (and in limited capacity because the phone cannot turn the TV on or off). The only app I have been able to find is Mediastream @$4.99. I may have to go that route but I was hoping for a free app or some other work around using wifi. Thanks again, Phil.
With the app Katan you can not only see iPhone photos on a smart TV (or Chromecast), but also compare photos side-by-side, and even adjust them, apply effects, etc. (all this on a TV). http://veprit.com/katan
