Replacing my HDD

I'm wanting to swap my HDD for a heftier one. I've never done it before on my macbook, but I know that it's not as easy as just pulling the old one out and putting in the new one. It's an Early '09 MacBook still running Leopard and just the other day, I ordered Snow Leopard so that I can upgrade to Mountain Lion. Is there something that I need to do before replacing the old HDD?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8), Early '09

Well if there are important files and things that you have on your old drive, you are going to want to make sure that you get them backed up before you make the swap so that you'll have access to those files when the drive is out. All you really do is remove the old one, put in the new one and then go through the setup of OS X to get it installed on the new one.

The #2 disk that came with your MacBook has iLife on it. Otherwise just use the retail 10.6 Snow Leopard disk to format and install your OS.

If you don't have your #2 disk the App Store version of iLife ‘11 programs will only work with 10.7 or 10.8. You can get the iLife ’11 DVD which will run on 10.6 on eBay or Amazon.com fairly cheap.
