Slow SMB/AFP share file listing

Hi!

Got problem with SMB/AFP share... Have MB Pro and WD My Book Live NAS. With Windows computer and even Android phone everything works flawless, even R/W speeds are 4 times slover than on Mac. The setting is Mac via Wifi connected to Airport Extreme and WD My Book Live is wired to Airport Extreme. Getting R/W speeds 22/16 MB/s... BUT, when opening folders with 100+ files, than it hangs up for 10sec to even few minutes.

Tried these solution, but they didn't work:

They were actual with 10.6, maybe in 10.8 somtehing has changed un workaround is something else.

Someone got ideas to fix that?

I can clean reinstall Mac OS if needed to check if apps are reason of my problem...

Highly recommended, since you've installed all kinds of system modifications, some of which are obsolete.

So. Clean reinstalled 10.8 - problem remains.

If you tested without restoring or reinstalling any of your software, and if you've really tried all the suggestions linked to my first comment, then I have no other ideas. You could take the machine to "Genius" bar to be tested, but I'm reasonably sure nothing would be found wrong with it.

Yes - clean install, no software, even no updates.

Last question - could it be possible that Airport Extreme is causing this behawior?

Not if you tested on another network and got the same results.

If ls -f is fast, I guess it's Finder's fault in any case. Could be a bug on Apple's side. Try not showing the icon preview in the folder that's taking a long time to load.

Tried to disable icon preview, no success.

Just enabled FTP on my WD NAS - connected with Transmit to FTP - it's really FAST, not as with SMB/AFP mount.

Yes - I would say, that it's something with Mac OS, maybe Finder...BUT - tried some altrenatives - same result.

just letting you know that you are not alone!

i have identical problems (when a directory on my NAS [QNAP brand] has over 100 files, i get impossibly slow finder access to it, despite the fact its a wired ethernet 1000mbps connection, regardless if i mount via SMB or AFP, only from OSX, windows PC access is fast). Im a network engineer and diagnose this stuff for a living - its definately an OSX issue unfortunately.

Martin, did you find any viable solution short of FTP?

Also, somewhere above a few of you mentioned turning off file icon preview in finder... how do i do this?

just adding, after some quick googling found out how to turn off icon previews. That has helped, as in now i can *LIST* (in finder) the files in a directory much quicker... however to "get info"on or say move say a subset of those files to another directroy still takes an age (several hours). So half of the problem has vanished i guess. Im going to try the TCP (delayed ACK etc) tweaks next to help with the remianing speed issues.

Im running mavericks BTW (and QNAP firmware 4.0.2) if anyone is interested, both the latest.

Hi!

After some time I've sold my WD and got DIY NAS (mini PC). It's much better with it, but not instant as on Windows. So I assume - problem is that Mac every time is trying to get full file list and on slow NAS, like those WD, QNAP and others, there is slow CPU which can't provide this list on short time, ihmo.

So... I'm living with that problem, because I have no idea how to get rid of it.

P.S.

I've got now one PC with i3 CPU - will try with it, to understand is it really a CPU problem.
