Trying to send an album as a gift

I have been trying to purchase and send an album from iTunes to a friend as a gift (from my iPhone 4S). When I try, I am asked to 'please enter a valid recipient email address'. I know the email is correct, but it will not let me proceed..... Any help?

iPhone 4S, iOS 7.0.1

Just to eliminate a possibility, this friend wouldn't happen to be in another country from yours?
