.diagnostics file missing so can't perform AHT

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) updated to Mountain Lion 10.8.5.

I can't seem to perform AHT whether I hold D or option D on startup.

I've read lots of support comments but still haven't worked out what to do.

I have a Snow leopard disc for which I used just to be able to update to lion.

This doesn't appear to have the file in it either.

Any suggestions?

Apple Hardware Test comes in the hard disk when you buy the Mac, but it's deleted when you upgrade Mac OS X or you format the hard disk. That's the reason why you can't run Apple Hardware Test.

At the moment, to run Apple Hardware Test, you need the DVDs that came with your Mac > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509 Insert it, plug the Mac to the charger, hold the D key while your Mac is starting and follow the steps.

If you haven't got the DVDs that came with your computer, call Apple to get replacement DVDs > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57

What is appearing wrong with your machine that you suspect a hardware issue?

AHT on the disks will be too outdated for the changes in firmware and OS X, you will need to take into a Genius Bar for their cable test, it's free.

But usually a machine that old would require a complete replacement if it's anything other than a hard drive or a fan that you can do yourself as Apple might not be (or charging a fortune) to service that model.

If you know or suspect it's the hard drive, you can install OS X onto a external drive to test it.
