I want to delete my apple account and start again so as to get rid of a previous email address which keeps coming up as my ID when I try to buy or update Apps.
This seems the only way forward in trying to get Apple to amend the pop up box when updating or purchasing from them...
Am I right? Or is there a simpler way?

HUH? What are you trying to do? If you are trying to get rid of the pop up which asks you to verify your password, you can't. No matter what you change your ID to, you will always have to verify before downloads and updates.
If you changed your email, but the old address keeps popping up and will not work, then you need to follow the links given by the previous poster. You must change ID's on the computer AND the device.
Keep in mind, anything you purchased with the old ID is forever tied to that ID. If you just dump it and create a new one, all the old Apps, songs, etc can potentially be lost.

I have finally worked out how to get the pop up box to show my new email address and therefore I can now sign in with my password and update my apps etc. i went to my ipad settings, App Store, clicked on AppleID, signed out and then signed in again with new email address which i previously changed in itunes on my pc.
For me, this is such a frustrating relief...one cannot possibly know where everything is on one's devices to make a simple change! Why doesn't Apple offer a pop up box showing or asking you to select which ID you wish to use to sign in with? It would make a lot of people happy me thinks! :)
