Oct 15, 2013 1:34 PM in response to The GeeManby Kappy,Not at all times. But if you connect them both to your local network, then you can enable File Sharing in order to sync the two together using a decent backup/sync utility.

Oct 15, 2013 1:37 PM in response to Kappyby The GeeMan,Something like ChonoSync? Which I've just been reading about?

Oct 15, 2013 1:40 PM in response to The GeeManby Kappy,Yes, that would work. Here are some others I can recommend:
Suggested Backup Software
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.

Oct 15, 2013 1:41 PM in response to Csound1by The GeeMan,I've heard of that also. Thanks! I'll review that as an option. However, what I'm learning, and receiving confirmation via the responses so far, is that I must use some application such as Sugarsync or Chronosync. I suppose the question is which suits my uses better. I want each computer to hold all of the same data, so I'm talking about more than 5 GB's

Oct 15, 2013 1:46 PM in response to The GeeManby Csound1,I use SugarSync, and I synchronize 200GB of data across 3 Macs, 1 PC an iPad and an iPhone. They all contain the same data except for the IOS devices which I limit to 25GB (not enough storage)
SugarSync was built for what you do, and 200GB costs about $150.00 per year.
SugarSync uses the internet for transfer/sync so it does not matter where the machines are (1 of mine is on another continent) and it works (background) continuously (provided there is an internet connection)

Oct 15, 2013 1:48 PM in response to The GeeManby Csound1,★HelpfulIt's very simple to setup and use, download the free version and try it out, you can expand the 5GB storage limit anytime you want.

Oct 15, 2013 1:50 PM in response to The GeeManby Kappy,★HelpfulUnless you need to sync over distance, why use something you pay for when you can do it on your own network both faster and cheaper.

Oct 15, 2013 1:55 PM in response to Kappyby The GeeMan,That is definitely what I was looking for initially. I just read about Sugarsync and see the deal there. I really don't think I want anything that complex. I want to be able to use my iMac most of the time, and sync the laptop when I travel. That's it.

Oct 15, 2013 2:03 PM in response to The GeeManby Kappy,What I do is connect my laptop to my iMac via Firewire cable. I then boot the laptop into Target Disk Mode and use Carbon Copy Cloner to sync one to the other depending upon which one has the most recent data.
If Firewire isn't possible, then an Ethernet or wireless connection to my local network does the trick. I simply enable File Sharing on both computers. Data may then be moved to one or the other using sync/backup software such as CCC or your choice. CCC will work with any mounted device.
I tend to avoid online backup services because uploading files is very slow compared to downloading. Your ISP may give you a fast pipe to download, but the upload pipe is considerably slower. I have a 15 Mb download pipe but only a 1 Mb upload pipe. And, those are Mega BITS, not Mega BYTES.
