Q: Time Capsule + Cable Router

Hello,

I've been experiencing some problems with my Time Capsule in my home network. My problem is:

I have a Cable Modem/Router that creates a WiFi, with the following settings:

Hitron_Technology.png

This cable modem is connected via an ethernet cable to my home Time Capsule's WAN port. My TC was configured to create the same exact WiFi, same safety options but different channel (or roaming, as I've read here and here). Both devices are in the same room, 5-6 inches apart (in case this matters).

The problem comes when connecting from my phone/ipad to this WiFi near the two devices. I assume it's because the portable device is trying to get an IP from both the Router AND the Time Machine, and ends getting what I've guessed it's a self-assigned IP (169.84.something) that doesn't make the internet work. After 5-10 minutes the mobile device figures things up and suddenly starts working.

a) This is tedious. It should easily work. I don't know if there's something I'm not configuring right... but roaming should be working.

b) When trying to change some of the settings in the TC a prompt about "having the right WAN address" popped up. I figured, as the following is one of the screens in the router config:

I may have to enter this WAN address and subnet mask somewhere in the TC confi.

c) I am looking forward to solving this because I recently acquired a DLINK AP to amplify the WiFi in my living room and I was hoping to configure it in roaming (same wifi, same pass, different channel) and I would like it to work fine (and not having devices with selfasigned IPs).

Thanks a lot for your time and help.

Regards,

Fernando

    Hola Fernando,

You have a router "upstream" from the Time Capsule, so you would want to make sure that the Time Capsule was configured to operate in Bridge Mode to work correctly on your network.

In other words, you do not want two devices to be providing IP addresses to your network devices.....only one device should be doing this.

Please check to make sure that the Time Capsule is configured to operate in Bridge Mode.

If you are not sure how to do this, click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen and then click About This Mac. Post back with the OS X Version number that you see there so we will know what version of AirPort Utility you are using.

    Hello,

First of all, thanks Bob for your answer.

I have the TC in "Bridge Mode" (modo puente, in spanish) and the following configuration:

    Captura_de_pantalla_16_10_13_15_00.png

    Captura_de_pantalla_16_10_13_15_01.png

    Utilidad_AirPort.png

I think it's the correct config.

I also think maybe having the WPA OR WPA2 option isn't good, and maybe setting it to either one of the two security options.

    Regarding my software:

Time Capsule is running firmware version 7.6.4

On my main Mac (Mac Mini late 2012) I'm running Airport Utility (6.3.1 [631.4]) and OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.5.

    Best

    Fernando

OK, thanks for verifying that you have the Time Capsule configured to operate in Bridge Mode.

Next, I suggest that we check the settings for Wireless Security. Your router and the Time Capsule use different names for this, so you may need to experiment to find the correct match.

Apple WPA2 Personal is the same setting as WPA2 - PSK - AES on other routers

Apple WPA/WPA2 Personal is the same setting as WPA - PSK - TKIP on other routers.

See if you can match up the settings on your router with the settings on the Time Capsule.

    Hi Bob

First, sorry for the delay answering, I've had a pretty busy week and I wanted to let this wireless fixing thing for the weekend.

Thanks for your answer, it was exactly the kind of tip I was looking for. I just configured my TC as just "WPA2 Personal" and my cable router as WPA2-PSK with PSK (and not mixed PSK/TKIP). Let's hope this works.

As the selfassigned IP appears to be very random, and I just get them on my portable devices some of the times I connect... I will give it a test time, see if it appears to work.

If it does I will then try to configure my new DLink PLC devices in roaming. Now I am working with two different SSIDs and passwords.

    Thanks Bob,

    Fernando

The WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless security setting should also be available on your Time Capsule if that helps you match things up.

This setting is not as secure as WPA2 Personal only, so try the WPA2 setting first.
