Panasonic PV-GS9 works with a firewire but they have no software to make it work with a Mac. Is there a work around? Own it

Want a work around for getting video off my Panasonic PV-GS9 which doesn't get recognized by imovies '11 on my older imac with a firewire that works with a Canon (which just bit the dust). Panasonic is of course sorry for the inconvenience of not offering a way to have it work with Apple (i.e. be recognized by imovies). Any suggestions?
