Safari constant crashing.... and slowing up my whole computer...

I have a MacBook Pro mid 2012

2.5 GHz Intel Core 5

4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5

Safari 6.0.5

Safari is crashing on me with only 2 windows open and 2 tabs each window.....

It is crashing within 10 minutes of launching it..

this has been happening for 2 weeks....

I heard that extentions can do this, BUT, I had no extentions at the time this started...

I added a few to see what would happen, and this is not making any difference....

Extentions I added are Ad Block- I did not have this before....

ebay, Translator...... anyway.... It crashes with and without these few extention and has

for over 2 weeks.....

It is getting to the point where I am having to use Chrome and Firefox....

I LOVE Safari and have been a huge fan for a long time.....

Can somebody please help me with this?????

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Step 1

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Step 2

In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

Hi Linc,

Thank you for your help....

Safari- I keep getting the spinning ball..... and it freezes my whole computer

and I have to force quit Safari.....

This happens if I hve only a few windows open.... and a few tabs on each window....

In my activites monitor, I am getting more page outs than in, if that helps....

and I am also using 3.8 GB of Memory.....

the other day it said Safari was using 1.9 G's of memory....

I only have 4 GB....

On my console.... I just copied and pasted the last minute of when it happend again....

on the left menue, right under ALL MESSAGES it says Safari......

here is what it said when it just froze again...... and it freezes quite a few times a day, sometimes when Safari

has only been open for a few minutes......

There's corrupt data in the hidden folder that stores document versions under the built-in versioning system. I'm not sure whether that issue is related to your problem with Safari, but you should fix it anyway as it will cause other problems.

This procedure will remove saved versions of your documents in all applications that support versioning. If you don't know what that means, you don't need to worry about it. Otherwise you'll have to restore the version data from a backup.

Back up all data.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

/.DocumentRevisions-V100

Right-click or control -click the line and select

Services Open

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named ".DocumentRevisions-V100" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your login password. Reboot, empty the Trash, and test.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Back up all data.

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

sudo mdutil -E /

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting. You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. Confirm. You don't need to post the warning.

If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Log in as one and start over.

The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear. You can then quit Terminal. Test.

Hi Linc....

YOU are so nice for helping me with this....

Thank you so much....

Now, just so I am clear..... Is this idiot proof????

I am NOT too literate when it comes to my Macbook.... That is putting it MILDLY....:-)

and after I run that command, where exactly will I find TRASHTHIS???

where is the top level of my startup volume????

I just want to make sure I will know exactly where to find this....

Thank you again for all your help.....

Oct 19, 2013 10:33 AM in response to justagurlinseattle

First, you haven't messed anything up. It's normal for Spotlight to be reindexing. You deleted the old Spotlight index.

The instructions in my last comment are safe as long as you don't mind losing saved versions in Core Data applications such as TextEdit or Pages. Those versions can be restored from a Time Machine backup, if necessary. If you don't know what I mean by saved versions, you don't have any.

The startup volume is represented by an icon on your Desktop or in the sidebar of a Finder window, under DEVICES.

That said, if you're uncomfortable about taking the steps I suggested, don't take them. Get someone more experienced to help you in person. One option is to make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store. It's a free service.
