Q: iPhone5 shuts down at 20%-30% battery since new IOS7 was installed

Ever since I installed the new IOS 7 operating system the day it premiered, not only do I have battery issues in which it drains quickly (seems to be a common occurrence) but now if I am using the phone (app, imsg, etc) when it gets down to about 30%, sometimes 23% the phone completely shuts off as if it was at 0% battery life (I say that exact number because it's been at exactly 23% on a few occasions where the phone shut off). The icon pops up that looks like a drained battery with an indication to plug it in, and when I plug it in the phone turns itself on immediately and then works fine. I was told to reset it, hard reset it etc, all of which I tried and to no avail. I have spoken with someone from Apple and they are telling me I need a new battery. The phone is just over a year old (so of course, they won't cover the battery replacement even though the issue started about two weeks ago and it's now two weeks past it's 1 year warranty), and I highly doubt it's a coincidence that the battery is suddenly acting up after the new operating system update. Is anyone having this same issue? Helpful comments would be appreciated. Thanks :)

I went today to my Genius Bar appointment and they ran the battery diagnostic check and advised that the battery was no longer working to its fullest capability.  They decided to replace this immediately at no cost and now we are all fixed.  No need to plead my case, just excellent service.

I had gone to the Apple store for this issue but becuase I am 1 year and 2 months over the allowed 1 year warranty, I was told that I would need to pay about $80 plus tax to have my battery replaced.  That is almost what I paid to enter the contract with the phone company.  I asked them if this is the case, under a 3 year plan am I responsible for replacing the battery 3 times?

Excellent service for those who are lucky enough have found the defective phone before the warranty 1 year period.  Not Excellent service for those who are outside that period.

    SOLVED:

I restored my iPhone 4s as new and this solved the problem but only for a couple of days. I tried everything people suggested here but nothing really worked. A couple of days ago, I replaced the battery with one that I had bought from iFixit and now the battery consistently goes right down to 1% before the iPhone shuts down. The old battery was 2 years old when the problem started and it wasn't expanded when I removed it.

At first, I wasn't sure about buying a non-OEM battery from iFixit but now I'm really happy with the result.

I also replaced 3 iPhone 5 batteries in the past few days (mine, my wife's, and co-worker's), and everyone has HUGELY improved battery life.

I don't know if the iFixit batteries are OEM or not, but all the markings on the new battery looked the same or close to my original battery.  I'd be willing to bet they came out of the exact same factory.

$30 for a battery kit with tools included (I think they have it on sale now for $25, same as the battery alone), plus about 10 minutes of time to replace it.  I highly recommend it to anyone having potential battery issues.

I did email iFixit and they said that their batteires are not OEM but have the same specifications of Apple OEM batteries.
