iPhone 5 shuts down with plenty of battery life left

i also face this problem with my 4s IOS 8.4
I have a solution which help most of da sufferer in dis type of problem

after automatically turn off of your iphone
let the iphone keep 12 hours without charge
then plug the charge
hope it will fix the problem

if it does not help you then keep the iphone 24 hours or more time without plugin to charger
after 24 hour connect the iphone with charger
and yes !
your iphone will all ok like before :-)

This is SOOOO frustrating. I have varying problems like ones mentioned here. I took the phone off my charger and walked the dog. Had charged all night, 100%. Walked 10 minutes listening to a downloaded podcast. Pulled up chrome, which is cellular enabled (NOTHING else but 'words with friends', and I guess SIRI by default, can access cellular) to check weather and BLANK SCREEN. I thought it crashed, but when I tried the power button, it had the 'plug in to charge' image. When home, put back on charger for about 10 minutes, then I had to leave, but after charging only 10 minutes battery meter said 100%. Listened to my podcast on the 20 minute drive, as the meter rapidly dropped to 1% and it has been in my office on standby all morning ALL ON 1% DISPLAYED BATTERY LEFT. according to battery settings screen: 36 minutes usage and 3 hrs, 39 min standby (the vast majority of that time while at 1%). I have read numerous articles about extending battery life -- I do ALL of it, screen brightness, standby mode, I do not read emails on my phone -- a typical day is maybe 1.5 hour podcast, 3 texts, no calls and maybe 4 word with friends plays. I just did the battery re-calibrate suggestion (full power deplete, full charge, full deplete, 'soft reset?' where you press/hold the home and power together). Would anyone recommend the full restore?

My first battery was replaced under that faulty battery program about a year ago with this dog. The worst thing about it losing its battery meter mind this morning at 90+% power was I was then incommunicado..... what if I had needed to call for help (accident, assault,...) -- you bet your behind Apple would be getting a lawsuit. If for no other reason than this, they should get this FIXED. I agree with others who say it is DEFINITELY their problem because the operating system cannot recognize available power, the scenario above is evidence of that. Someone is going to get hurt relying on this device and having it TOTALLY FAIL them at a critical moment. My next phone will NOT be an Apple unless this is resolved!!!!!!!

This is very frustrating indeed. Battery status indicator is all over the place. Does anyone know if iPhone 6 has the same issues? I wanted to buy my mother one but now I'm delaying the purchase.

My wife has the same problem as everyone here, where her iPhone shuts down at random, doesn't really matter what the battery percentage currently is. I thought it also was the battery, but when she got a new case for her iPhone 4, she gave me her old iFrogz case.

I never use a phone case because I just like it that way and I very rarely drop things, but when I put her case on my iPhone 4s the same thing happened to my phone in just hours from putting it on. I decided to keep it on for a few more days, getting the phone to work by connecting it to the power cable or my computer when it would randomly shut down. It would shut down at random within hours sometimes days, and my wife's phone would still do the same.

I decided to take my phone case off, and to this day over a month has passed with no shut down and it never shut down before the case was put on, but my wife likes her phone case and she is willing to deal with the random shut downs.

Get rid of those cases or find one that won't randomly shut the iPhone down. Just saying… somethings in the case.

iPhone 6 has exactly same issues. In winter time when temperature goes below 5 C it turns off at 70%. Try to call emergency. After a minute it will shut itself down. iPhone 4 battery life was way better in cold temperatures.

Today my iPhone 6 shut down itself at +5 C and 30% battery life.

Agree with high drain activities seem to trigger it, from my own observation. (e.g. Apple music + Waze-Navigation, Recording video + MotionX-GPS Tracking).

I purchased my iPhone5 from a family member who upgraded to the iPhone 6. They never had this problem with the 5 and its only started these shenanigans recently, which leads to me think its an upgrade glitch of some sort. I used to think that it was because of certain apps I was using or games, but this morning I was only trying to check a voicemail and it shuts down before I can even enter my voicemail pin. My battery life was at 100%. It charged all night and that was my first time picking it up to use it. I've tried the soft reboot and hard reboot (or reinstall, whichever term may be correct) and it seems the problem has gotten worse.

Isn't someone from Apple supposed to chime in on the support questions at some point? I've read through all of the comments and gone through the steps of trying to fix the problem myself. To no avail. I'm really sick of this problem. Especially since it is a new development after using my phone for about a year. I hate upgrading. It always brings on some kind of problem...

Have an iPhone 5S with iOS 7.x and won't upgrade to iOS 9.x as iOS 8 is not available anymore but was told by many Apple-related technicians and read on many media articles that iOS 9 is a relatively battery hog and meant for the Newer iPhones. It will drain the battery in the older iPhone 5 models!

One does NOT need to be running apps in the background for the battery to be drained.

Shut off all Non-Essential apps/settings not running like Turning OFF 'Location Services' and ALL 'Push' services to Manual push.

All this will do is slow the battery drainage.

If one still has either iPhone 5 models, it'll be ~2-3 years old and a newer battery may be needed.

Battery replacements are available for sale online but many can be questionable based on the reviews.

Kits are for those people who are confident in their manual dexterity skills.

Otherwise, look for a local battery replacement store in your area and pay a slighter higher cost to replace the battery.

If you worry more about the quality, then pay Apple MORE to replace the battery!

You don't need iOS 8 to upgrade to iOS 9.

iOS 9 runs fine on 5S and no more battery drain the iOS 8

Hum, this problem has presented on my sons iphone 5 which is otherwise spotless. He likes to use it for frun keeper. Makes sure its at a 100% but barley makes a mile before the phone has switched off

When he gets home it prompts to put the power in when you do so it restarts with 40% + battery life.

Its no use advising the calibration method, you cannot calibrate as it shuts down half way through a battery cycle.

These DFU and Restore and Resets and Battery Recalibration did not work for me.

I have suffered with this switch off problem for 6 months now. Finally I think I may have fixed it.

Firstly, just turn the phone to low power mode after a full charge and revel in the long battery life. Irrespective of the excitement you will see in the battery lasting so long, do observe whether the phone turns off or not.

If you find that the phone doesnt turn off, then it is clear that there is no hardware problem. Now your culprit is either an app that uses background data, or an app that uses location.

For me, turning off background app data worked and my phone drained power gracefully and turned off only after 1% charge. When I turned it back on I started getting shutdowns at 40% or 20%. I seem to have narrowed it down to whatsapp.

Try turning off the background app data for whatsapp, or better still, uninstall that godforsaken app and your $500+ iphone will show no battery problems.

I have an iPhone 5S on which is about 3 years old and just recently started to shut down around 47-ish % battery. Dropped calls and other crap like dying out before it is time which is obviously frustrating. I'm on 10.1.1 by the way.

I was bored one night and upset with my phone, so luckily, I have a spare part iPhone with a motherboard issue, but a good battery, so I went through the hassle of swapping out batteries (Oh gee, I hope that's not taboo here about DIY, but I didn't want my old iPhone 5S going to complete waste after experiencing blue screen issues after the warranty expired and no, the terminal reboots were not from a newbie screen change because that had the original). Anyways, problem solved with a battery change like so many others in this topic!

The old battery seemed somewhat squishy like fluid was within the wrap. I was going to experiment first with restoring and all that shizzy to document my repair, but I'm glad I just went with a gut feeling about an issue with the battery because that's exactly what it was because my parts phone is experiencing the same issue because it has my old battery in it now.

Three years of battery life until failure... I suppose that's 'alright' with daily charges and whatnot, but what a pain in the arse to change and makes me wish I simply bought a brand new battery for all that trouble. At least the 5 model has a pull-strap to dislodge the battery while the 5S has weak glue strip pull cords which rarely work. In fact, neither worked in either phone.

My phone has recently been dying at 12%-30% battery life. When I plug it in and turn it back on it shows the same amount of battery life that was there before. I'm aware that this is a known issue, however, my phone's serial number does not fall within the scope identified by Apple to qualify for a replacement. How should I proceed in resolving this issue?

I now have the battery shutdown problem also on my iPhone 5...started a week ago when my Personal Hotspot stopped working and I was forced to upgrade to 10.1.1! With all of the 6 & 7 problems of late, and unavailability of 7(Plus), guess I'm gonna need to go Android, and at this point I cannot say I will miss Apple.

When you say to shut it down and leave it for 4-6 hours, do you mean to shut the phone off but leave it sitting on the charger for 4-6 hours? Or shut off the phone and let it sit OFF the charger for 4-6 hours?
