iPhone 5 shuts down with plenty of battery life left

I have been having some serious iPhone problems lately. I upgraded to iOS 7 when it first came out and only had a few issues, now more recently I am having problems, especially with the battery. My battery meter seems to be inaccuriate or the battery itself is jacked. My battery seems to drain very quickly even when I am not using my phone. I have done all the tricks to save the battery; turned off Bluetooth, turn off auto refresh for backgroud apps, turned off the motion screen, no dymanic background, etc. However my battery still drains quicker than normal. Lately my phone completely shuts itself off and shows me the dead battery icon even though I have anywhere between 20 and 40 left on my battery. When I plug my phone back in after it dies the battery icon shows a different and yet higher battery life then what it was at when it shut off. I have also noticed that my phone shuts off after I use my camera. THAT part is really annoying.

Is this an iOS 7 issue or is there something wrong with my phone? I have insurance on my phone so I can have it replaced, but the cost to replace my phone is more than if I were to get a new and DIFFERENT phone altogether.

I have the same problem every since the iOS7 update. It's ridiculous! It will shut down from 13 % up to 30% and when I try to turn it back on (lock button) it will show the 'need to charge' photo. When I press the home button & lock button though it turns on and shows the battery % only to shut down a few minutes later. I have my iphone (5) for roughly 10 months and it's in perfect condition, never dropped it, not one scratch and it makes me angry seeing little annoying bugs like this that ruin an otherwise great phone. Please Apple, fix this soon!

Just thought I'd add my two cents to this thread. I'm in the Apple store as I type and waiting on a new battery to be installed to the tune of $79. I purchased the phone December 8, 2012 so naturally it's just beyond the warranty! This is total crap and I can honestly say I will be looking at the Samsung when it's time to renew. NOt sure if anyone else has had any luck with getting a repsonse from Apple but it sure seems like an issue they should correct. Like others on here I didn't have any trouble with the battery until I installed iOS7...since the install the battery has been unstable. Sometimes it holds a charge, sometimes it drains within an hour with minimal use and sometimes it shuts down with 15% remaining...extremely frustrating!!

I also have an iphone 5 which was experiencing the same issue: battery will be mid-high (40-80%) (appropriate for level of use) and i'll actually observe the phone instantly dropping like 20% points and then maybe 2-10minutes later i'm at 20% battery life followed by a dead phone. Immediately after plugging the device to a power source the device reboots and returned backed to the mid-high% level.

This issue has been occurring for approx 1-3 months. It DID occur to me whilst i was running ios 6.0.3.

I hope its not another 80$ fix, being out of warranty *****. Apple told me it would cost 275$ to replace the phone because they "can't" fix the camera in house (my camera has a dust particles under the lens). I bought a tool kit to "do it myself" for a total of 50$. In the end, i have less dust particles 😟. I'm just going to wait till the iphone6 to upgrade.

Just found this thread after my iPhone 5 (running os 7.04 after waiting for bugs to get out of it -- I thought -- and upgrading to 7 right before Xmas) shut off at 50% power. Weird -- but feel like I am at least in good company. Which battery packs are best for backup? I could check the Tekserve store on this but your ideas will be good back-up. Got my iPhone on Black Friday, 2012, after my old trusty Samsung finally gave up its ghost, so I feel similarly. New battery already?? Seriously?? And it obviously isn't solving others' problems. Will be back to catch up on YOUR progress.

I dont think that this solution fixes the problem entirely. Some day the battery behaves properly, but then drops like a rock the next day. It seems to me that it is a software bug in ios7 that does not properly assess the capacity of iphone 5 depending on what applications are running (but is probably fine with 5c and 5s). Cold temperature seems to make matter much worse (went from 60% to shutting down in about 10min for me with GPS and music on). Before the ios7 upgrade I had no problem, battery would last about a business day. It seems to be affecting everyone with an iphone 5. Apple really needs to fix this, I cant rely on my phone.

If your phone is under warranty take it back to apple they may replace the battery or give you a new phone. If the phone is not under warranty you would be better off replacing the battery yourself. Apple charges 80 dollars for a 7 dollar battery you can find on amazon. And the tools to replace the battery for 6 to 7 dollars. Since I replaced the battery myself I have not had the issue with the phone shutting off with 50 percent. There are videos on YouTube that will show you how to replace the battery. This may fix your issue.

Just wanted to add my name to the list of folks experiencing this issue. Phone shuts down with as much as 50% battery remaining. Thought maybe there was a bug in iMapMyRun but the other conditions you mention make more sense - I've been running in 25*F weather with my phone out front in a tune belt. Everything runs fine until I take my phone out at the end of the run and try to Finish the run. I'm sure whatever the app is doing is taking more battery. I think I've seen the camera as the culprit once or twice as well. This morning for the first time my battery only reached 97% charged after 10 hrs plugged in to the OEM charger/cord. I'll try the calibration but I'll probably go ahead and order a battery as you guys suggested. I think I've had my iPhone 5 for ~15 mo now or however long it's been out. I've been on 7.0.4 for the last few weeks when most of this started. I was on 7.0.3 before that.

It has nothing to do with iOS 6, as you could easily learn by searching the forum. There are as many or more reports of this problem with iOS 6. And with other iPhone models. And with other iOS versions on those other models.

It is one of 2 possibilities: Either your battery is failing (remember that it is rated for 500 full charge cycles) or your battery gauge needs to be recalibrated. The instructions for doing this have been posted many times in this thread and others. I leave it as an exercise for the student to find those instructions.

I would suggest replacing the battery. Don't go to the apple store unless you want to get ripped off with a 80 dollar fee. When you can replace the battery yourself for less than 15 dollars from amazon. I had the same issue with the phone shutting off at 30 percent battery left even the so called genius at the apple store told me my battery was boarder line good. He told me to reboot my phone to factory settings run down the battery and fully charge the battery. Did all that but still had the same issue weather was not a factor. Phone would shut off when a call or text would come in. It was very frustrating. I took a shot in the dark and bought a battery from amazon for 7 dollars and the tools for 6 dollars. Watched a YouTube video on how to replace the battery. It took my about 10 minutes (most of the time spent was the battery was glued to the phone) there were a total of 4 screws. Since I replaced the battery I have had no issues with it shutting off unexpectedly. The battery percentage is accurate. My iPhone 5 was only 18 months old. I believe that there was a bad cell in the battery and a change in the os7 update that probably requires more battery power to run certain programs is what caused my phone to shut down unexpectedly. Bottom line replace the battery. Hope this helps

I'm completely in agreement here. Despite talk of calibration and ios7, I'm convinced my issue is hardware which occurred with the phone at about 13 months old.

I've gone down the whole 'fully restore and reset' route twice and this has made no difference. The fact is for 12 months I used a golf gps app to track distances to greens and scores for a party of 3. A full round is about 4 hours and from a full charge it never switched off and there was charge left for txt's & calls afterwards as well as catching up on sports results.

From a full charge now, the phone powers off after 10 to 14 holes, 2 to 3 hours. This is not software miscalculating %battery life, it's significantly reduced battery capacity.

I'll try the self-replacement too.

I am having the same issuew with my iPhone5 and IOS 7. I should have replaced the battery while it was under the warranty. Sadly, I fear that the iPhone and iPad are going downhill as far as usage is concerned. I wish Apple would try to compete with Adnroid by making their product better, but they must think that they have a great product and there is no need to address issues such as fast battery drain. I guess they are looking at making more profits if people have to pay to replace their battery after the warranty is up.

I got my iPhone 5 when released and started having problems in Nov 2013 with randomly shutting down while the display showed plenty of battery left (30%-60%). The first time the phone shut down, I was running in cold weather (about 20 degrees) with a full charge and using a GPS running app. The phone shut down while running and wouldn't power on until plugged in. Then it happened three times in January. The first two times I was out running in 40+ degree weather, using a running app. It was REALLY frustrating trying to run with plenty of battery and having my phone die in the middle of it. The latest time was last night, I had over 30% battery and took a photo...indoors. The phone shut down and wouldn't power up until plugged in. Of course, each time I plug it back in, it powers on and shows plenty of battery. I took my phone to the Apple store and they tested my battery. They said the battery was still in the "normal" range. They did a software reset, but then I had the employee check the crash log and he saw springboard crashes. He said I might have to erase and re-install IOS. This is frustrating...never had this problem with my iPhone 4....I worry that I will be at work out in the cold and the phone will just die randomly - unacceptable. I planned on upgrading when the 6 comes out, but now I don't know if I'll stick with Apple...
