iPhone 5 shuts down with plenty of battery life left

I have been having some serious iPhone problems lately. I upgraded to iOS 7 when it first came out and only had a few issues, now more recently I am having problems, especially with the battery. My battery meter seems to be inaccuriate or the battery itself is jacked. My battery seems to drain very quickly even when I am not using my phone. I have done all the tricks to save the battery; turned off Bluetooth, turn off auto refresh for backgroud apps, turned off the motion screen, no dymanic background, etc. However my battery still drains quicker than normal. Lately my phone completely shuts itself off and shows me the dead battery icon even though I have anywhere between 20 and 40 left on my battery. When I plug my phone back in after it dies the battery icon shows a different and yet higher battery life then what it was at when it shut off. I have also noticed that my phone shuts off after I use my camera. THAT part is really annoying.

Is this an iOS 7 issue or is there something wrong with my phone? I have insurance on my phone so I can have it replaced, but the cost to replace my phone is more than if I were to get a new and DIFFERENT phone altogether.

I have the same problem every since the iOS7 update. It's ridiculous! It will shut down from 13 % up to 30% and when I try to turn it back on (lock button) it will show the 'need to charge' photo. When I press the home button & lock button though it turns on and shows the battery % only to shut down a few minutes later. I have my iphone (5) for roughly 10 months and it's in perfect condition, never dropped it, not one scratch and it makes me angry seeing little annoying bugs like this that ruin an otherwise great phone. Please Apple, fix this soon!

Definitely add me to this too. Had my phone cut off (multiple times in the last couple of months) showing anywhere between 27% and 38% battery remaining and would not turn back on until I plugged it back into a charger, when it would fire up showing 20% to 40% (sometimes more than the charge showing when it cut off.

Really p****ng me off as its usually in a spot where I don't have a charger immediately to hand and its starting to feel unreliable, which is exactly what you need a mobile to be should an emergency ever arise.

I know Apple says you don't have to calibrate the battery for our phones, but it seems that since the ios7 update, it's a must. Here's how i do it, and so far it worked, my phone shuts down at 1%.

1. Charge your phone till 100%.

2. Use it until it shuts down. (When it shuts down, try to power it on a few times over the course of an hour just to make sure it doesn't start)

3. Connect it to the charger, shut it down the moment it powers on and leave it there for about 4-6 hours.

4. Power it on and use it normally,

5. Drain your phone, use it until it turns off then repeat steps 3 and 4.

6. Return to your regular charge cycle.

Hope this helps.

Same issue here, but mine iphone 5 has not been upgrade to the new iOS and is still on the iOS6. Today I was using the camera and it shut down with the dead battery screen. I plugged it into the charger to get the phone to power back up and it showed 52% and I was able to immediately unplug the phone and continue to use it. I did see how much battery was showing before it shut down, but it was certainly over 45%.

This is the third time this week this has happened. Don't believe the other two times it happen I was using the phone, but doing other tasks.

I have had the same problem twice in the last three days.

First instance, at 15% reported on battery life, the phone shuts down, and the out of battery need to connect screen is shown. I had to connect to power, and when it came back on, it reported 15% battery left.

Second iinstance was at 35%, same thing, powered down, upon connect to power source, when it turned back on, it was at 35%.

Both instance will not let me turn on the phone without connecting to power.

iPhone 5, updated to iOS 7.0.3.

I was able to find out the issue with my phone. Turns out the battery was depleted. I ran a diagnosis online and the results showed my battery was depleted. Same thing happend when I called Apple Support and they ran a diagnosis. I had to go to the Apple store and have the battery replaced ($79 + tax charge). Naturally, I was just a few days outside my warranty otherwise it may have been free.

I think this is more of an iPhone 5 issue rather than an iOS 7 issue, but the combination of the two seem to be a real problem. This is probably why Apple is no longer offereing the iPhone 5. I had the 3 and 4S longer than the 5 and I never had an issue with the battery.

my 4S and my fiancees 5 does exactly the same. my 4S will turn itself off at random percentages. it will stay off and show connect to itunes, however if i leave it for half an hour then try to turn it on, it will boot straight up to a different percentage , usually higher than the original it shut down with.

alternatively if it does shut down and i am near a power source then i can simply plug it in and it boots back up instantly. i have had to take to carrying a portable charging device so i dont get caught out (power bank ebay)

I purchased my iPhone5 from a family member who upgraded to the iPhone 6. They never had this problem with the 5 and its only started these shenanigans recently, which leads to me think its an upgrade glitch of some sort. I used to think that it was because of certain apps I was using or games, but this morning I was only trying to check a voicemail and it shuts down before I can even enter my voicemail pin. My battery life was at 100%. It charged all night and that was my first time picking it up to use it. I've tried the soft reboot and hard reboot (or reinstall, whichever term may be correct) and it seems the problem has gotten worse.

Isn't someone from Apple supposed to chime in on the support questions at some point? I've read through all of the comments and gone through the steps of trying to fix the problem myself. To no avail. I'm really sick of this problem. Especially since it is a new development after using my phone for about a year. I hate upgrading. It always brings on some kind of problem...

Hello,

i posted on another thread.. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5294966

However, this thread describes the same issue i've been having this week.

in the diginostic area from settings.. i see the crash list and it lists..

Panic.plist

As of today, it was crashing very very frequentely. Going to try to run the battery dead and see if this changes anything.

I'd just like to say that ahs70's post on Dec 1, 2013 at 1:17am on Pg. 9 worked for me as well: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5338609?start=120&tstart=0

If your iPhone's battery is acting up you need to determine if it's a software issue or a hardware/battery issue. To do that, after syncing your iPhone, erase/hard reset all data and settings from your iPhone to what it was from the factory as new. This can be found in Settings/General/Reset/Erase All Content and Settings. Then test it out for a day or two. If it's still acting up then it's likely a hardware issue and you will need to get your battery replaced. If your warranty is done than check out this link to get a battery kit to replace your iPhone battery yourself: http://www.ifixit.com/Store/iPhone/iPhone-5-Replacement-Battery/IF118-001#produc tDescription

If your iPhone is now working properly after hard resetting it than it's most likely a software issue. This battery issue only started after upgrading to the new iOs7, so it is obviously related to the update not properly installing itself. What has worked for me and many others is to manually update to iOS 7.0.4 using the full downloaded version of the update which is about 1.32 Gigs.

But first you need to find out what model of iPhone you have, click here to determine if it's GSM or CDMA: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3939?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Then go here and scroll down to download the iOS 7.0.4 complete update for your device: http://www.downloadios7.org/download-ios-7-0-4-ipsw-file.html

Then scroll up on the download page and follow the instructions of updating your iPhone manually following the instructions below: "IPSW with iTunes"

And your done.

Problem solved.

I only posted this because it was a very frustrating problem that no one really seemed to figure out a solution for.

I hope this helps.

I have the same problem too with my iphone 5. Usually its when I am using the camera, the phone will just turn off even if battery shows as half full. When I get home and plug it into a charger the battery shows the original amount of charge and can then be used as normal.

it shutdown and locked me out until i could plug into power

as soon as i plugged in, it said it was at 44% power.

btw the camera on ios7 is complete death to batteries. i can drain a battery in 2 hours just by leaving the camera on, unused.
