This has been happening to me as well on my 5s. I realized today it's happening when my cell signal registers as 1x (which is Sprint's old network). Interestingly, I was able to use my podcast app just fine. Amazon music player worked fine too. I tried restarting a few times and it changed nothing for Music. Now that I'm home, have a good cell signal and am on wi-fi, the songs that wouldn't play are fine. Does your phone display the || (pause) or > (play) icon when it's malfunctioning? Mine indicates it's playing by displaying the || but pressing it does nothing either.

Hey Randy,

We have the same problem. I realized what the problem was after verizon sent me a notice about my data usage. The music app is constantly downloading songs to your phone when you are listening to music. It used a lot of my data. 😟 Even though some music is already in your phone, the app will not play the current song until the app finishes "downloading" the song from the cloud. Which in turns stalls the app until the it gets a signal to install the rest of the song. I solved this by, going to SETTINGS, then MUSIC, then close the SHOW ALL MUSIC option. Only music that has been downloaded to the device will be shown. It has been working fine so far. Hope this helps. 🙂

Thanks, Urit! I've changed the settings and will report back when I get a chance to test it in a low signal zone. Looks promising since all the songs with the iCloud download icon are gone. Nice sleuthing. Sure would be nice if Apple very clearly called out changes which have the potential to be financally detrimental to their buyers. I hope this doesn't end up being your sitution with all the data usage.
