iPod Touch 4th gen not recognized in iTunes, read below...

So I plug my iPod touch 4th gen into my Windows 8 laptop and I get the little Windows 8 has recognized that a USB device has been plugged in jingle. But the iPod does not charge, is not recognized by iTunes, and is not recognized by File Explorer. So all I really get is the jingle. How do I fix this? I just downloaded the latest iTunes (11.1.1). Thanks for your help!

iPod touch, iOS 6.1.3

I followed the directions under Step 5 at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538. The drivers were already enabled so I moved down to Reinstall The Driver. For some reason, there were three "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver"s listed so I deleted them all, following the instructions. When I scanned for hardware changes, the driver did not reappear as described. I did not get an error code, question mark, or exclamation mark. I can't follow the next step because the driver is not there. So I clicked "If the AMD USB Driver is not listed" category and followed all the instructions, but I get this error:

User uploaded file

So I then went to "How to restart the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) on Windows" and followed the restart instructions - did not work. The startup type is already set to Automatic. So I guess I now need to reinstall iTunes and the drivers. But how do I do this while keeping all of my iTunes data, and, will doing this prompt me for my security questions when setting up iTunes again? Also, I think other programs on my PC are using the Bonjour service. Will the uninstall affect those in any way?

I tried the device sync tests but iTunes does not recognize my iPod touch so this does not identify any issues.

Uninstalling iTunes will not remove your data, though it is always wise to have a backup of your content just in case something were to go wrong. If you have an external drive, the easiest way to make a backup is to just copy the entire iTunes folder. Nor will uninstalling iTunes have any effect on your iTunes Store account or Apple ID in any way.

I was having the same problem, finally figured it out. I am a W8 user. Went to control panel, device manager, and expanded portable devices. I happened to have my iPhone plugged in to a USB port, and it showed up. Clicked on the iPhone, clicked on the driver tab, and updated the driver. Now it connects to iTunes.

So apparently the driver in my iPhone 4 was the problem. The TS1538 article did not address this issue. I still think it has something to do with the iTunes 11.1.1.11 update, because my phone and my wife's iPhone 4s worked before the update and didn't after the update. My guess is this is the problem many are having right now.
