What is the home button?

What in the world is the home button? I cannot remember the passcode from when I updated and now I can not get into my IPad. It says to hold down the home button so I can get back to the original factory settings. I can not even fet the icloud backup to work.

iPad (3rd gen) Wi-Fi, iOS 7.0.2

The home button is the round button on the bottom. Holding it will not reset you to factory settings if you can't get into it. You may have to erase it from iCloud if you can't remember your password.
