FCP7 gradually lags to a halt during playback.

I used this tutorial to manage video files from my iPhone and import them into FCP7 for editing. I don't have to worry about rendering audio now, but playback grinds to a halt when I play the files. It's pretty frustrating and I could use some help on solving yet another problem.

Well, that tutorial was wrong. It skipped the vital stage of converting the iPhone video to a codec that FCP works with...specifically ProRes. Because you should need to render anything when you add video to the timeline, and even though that guy clicked YES when FCP asked "Do you want the sequence to match the clip," he still had a red render bar.

FCP doesn't work with the native format the iPhone shoots. You first need to use COMPRESSOR to convert it to ProRes LT, or ProRes 422...then you can edit it.

It's a shame that someone made a really wrong tutorial like that.

Hi Shane. No worries! At least someone's finally replying to a topic of mine. 😀 Sorry for the late response, by the way. Logic board went out on my poor laptop and it was getting repaired.

I converted it exactly like the guy in the video instructed. Here's the summary from the Droplet I saved to my desktop:

Do other files play ok?

Could be a drive problem. Make sure you have at least 10% free space on all drives and 20% on your startup drive. Run diskutility: drive repair on all drives and also run diskwarrior if you've got it.

If you don't have it, I'd recommend getting it. It's saved my life a few times.

You might also try running a disk speed test to see if perhaps the drive is failing. Do some googling, and you should be able to find a free utility.

Here are some fcp troubleshooting tips. Might be an idea to go thru them and see if anything helps.
