I have used all the battery in my Ipad so it is at 0% now I need it to charge but I can't tell on the screen whether it is charging or not...

I had a similar situation with a dead iPad where I couldn't tell if it was charging or not. After a few minutes of charging, I found if I pressed the Home button the battery indicator was displayed on the screen showing it was charging and the charge level.
Hopefully in the last 3 years, they resolved their problem. I have made the same mistake of posting to a very old thread.
