Take a look at More Like This to your right.
in general you don't need to secure empty the trash unless you have sensitive information on your computer. a regular empty is sufficient.
open finder preferences and in advanced section and uncheck next to secure empty trash
restart the mac and try holding the option key down while emptying the trash. if that doesn't work the following article helps address trash issues:

Locked files can easily be deleted if you press Shift-Option or Option key combination while emptying the Trash (in Mac OS X 10.1 and later). For Mac OS X versions 10.0 to 10.0.4, use Show Info to deselect the item's Locked checkbox.

thank you for this simple solution. i have been trying to empty my trash can for 2 days (it had 7,000+ items) and was flummoxed. i tried terminal windows etc but simply unticking "empty trash securely" in finder preferences finally did the trick!
