Not built-in, but, HW, if you have downloaded and installed Devon WordService you have a command for that in your Services under the Pages menu. I think I remember your being advised to use WordService in the past, so you may already have this capability. If not, go to Devon Technologies and download WordService.

Once you get it, you will have to put it in your HD > Library > Services folder and then activate it System Preferences, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts, Services.

oof. i am tripping all over myself on this one. of course like a dope i downloaded it from the devon site, then i printed the thread so i can try and find it when i re-install and i forget about this helpful suggestion and then i go into pages looking for services. now i am back. lol.

so - can you please help me with Services? i see i should get in here at some point and study up on it a bit. first, should i click on "Preferences" when i am in Numbers and pulldown to Services? i mean, this takes me to two tabs with one being Keyboard Shortcuts (which is apparently not resizeable for some un-mac-like reason?) and the other is Keyboard.

if i don't select Services when i pulldown i have an option for Houda-whatever that i downloaded at some point...

am i in the right place?

should i install this .services file somewhere that came in the WordService folder download instead...?

THANK YOU

Services are activated in the System Preferences, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts window, not the Numbers Preferences window.

Click the checkbox for each Service you wish to activate.

When it's time to use the service, you will Select the text and then go to Numbers > Services and choose the one you need. Here's what the menu looks like:

holy moly jerry.

can you just please tell me how i /activate/ the devonthink plugin for services for WordService? i mean, i guess i can read the read me now that i think about it but i guess i have to drop a file in a folder somewhere that already exists on my hard drive and i should create a little alias so i can get to it quickly next time from my desktop.

anyway, can i /please/ ask you what services you have found useful? it looks to me like i need to spend some time tuning my ride (so to speak) so i get better performance and i spend less time spinning.

i mean, it looks like you have a whole host of good things that come up when you pull down to services in numbers and i get two which seems really limiting now that i see your screenshot.

do you have any system-wide services or other numbers services that you have implemented/installed that are super helpful...?

thanks

ah. i meant devon technologies' WordServices package. i am trying to install this per your suggestion to get the lowercase options working in Numbers > Services after selecting the text i need to make lower case.

i read the install guidelines and they are telling me to put it in my Library in my Home Folder. there are two Library folders for starters with one (both??) being hidden in Lion or something. plus - i am /storing/ my data on my third drive in my mac pro and running my OS on my first drive in my mac pro. so i am /guessing/ that they want me to install it in the Home Folder on my drive in Bay 1 (where my OS is installed). i am seeing thisLibrary folder without having to run a CTRL or an OPTION or something to be able to see it.

anyway, if i try and drop the WordService.service file in the Services folder on drive #1 in home folder i get a "Services folder cannot be changed" error and a prompt to Cancel or "Authenticate".

does it sound like i should i Authenticate??

hi jerrold.

can you please tell me what the name of the functionality is that i should be looking for here? i am still doing this by hand and it makes me not so happy that they did not think this functionality was worthy of the program proper.

i have gone ahead and added the .service file that came with the download to the Services folder and i am (unfortunately) not seeing this functionality in numbers. do you happen to know what could be going on here?

> do i have to ACTIVATE this services functionality by clicking something in Preferences by any chance? i mean, right now if i am in Numbers and i pull down to services i see the following:

Pictures:

Capture Selection From Screen

Import Image

Searching:

New HoudaSpot Window

Preferences

do i need to get into Preferences and tell Preferences to SHOW ME some other functionality in this pulldown in numbers? i guess i am not understanding how the Preferences section of Services interacts with what i see in Numbers Services - or in any other software or even in the interface for that matter.

maybe i should check everything in Services and see what shows up in Numbers?

TIA

HW,

See the second screen shot in my third post from the top. That's a Numbers Screen Shot, showing the Services available for Numbers after adding Devon Wordservice. You will not fine a "Change to lower case" option, but there is "Initial Caps of Sentences". That will get you close enough, I hope.

Note that you must select some text before the service is available. Not a Table, not a Cell, but Text.

hi jerrold.

thanks for the help here. sorry for the multiple posts.

services certainly looks like something that may be very useful over here and long term i will surely follow up on it. on this one issue, though. i am /not/ seeing "change lower case option" after selecting text. i /am/ seeing other options that i did not see before (thanks for this), which i assume means that for one reason or another that .services file has not yet been installed correctly even though i have it here on my desktop in the WordService folder i downloaded.

anyway, i will keep trying to put this file where it belongs to see if i can get this functionality implemented but can i ask you this?

once installed is this going to let me change something that is in ALL CAPS LIKE THIS to lower case or is it only going to change the first letter of each word in cases where the words themselves are capitalized...?

thank you

As I noted in my last post, there is an option for Initial cap of Sentence. I'm intentionally talking around the obvious solution for a spreadsheet app, the use of a Function. If your all-upper case string is in A, you can write:

=LOWER(A)

to get the same text in all lower case. To turn that from the result of an Expression in a Cell to straight text, Command-C then Edit > Paste Values.

I think we already covered that, but just in case it slipped between the cracks, I've repeated it.
