How to upgrade from 4g to 5g after iPod stolen

I recently had my iPod 4g stolen and am replacing it with a 5g. Is there a way to recover data from the old software into the new? My password program is the most important, and it restored from the cloud. However there is no data. Should I have started my new 5g by restoring (which I didn't think would work because of the upgrade)?
