No volume control on Remote iPhone app?

When I got my first iPhone years ago, one of my biggest "Wow!" moments was being able to control the music playing off my Apple TV with my iPhone via Apple's Remote app. Not only could I select which song or Playlist I wanted to hear, but I could easily adjust the volume. I could be in the back yard, or anywhere within WiFi range for that matter, and have complete control of my system. Apparently, at some point, for some god-foresaken reason, Apple removed the volume control from Remote, severely diminishing Remote's functionality. What, now I'm supposed to carry around a stand-alone remote with me too just to adjust the volume? What the ****?

Are there any third-party apps or other solutions out there that can fill this maddening void?
