lightning dock extender

Would it not be easier (and probably considerable cheaper) to extend the HDMI side of things? No licensing problems with HDMI!

I too have an AppRadio 3 and have been searching for an extension cable. The issue isn't the overall length but that the Apple Digital Video adaptor has such a small cable, it gets cranked back and forth so much that eventually it causes the cable to fail (I'm on adaptor #2 at this point). It also means that you have have 2 cables coming out of the bottom of your phone which makes for more problems moving it around. It's a pain really. Having a single cable coming out of the dash instead of a thich HDMI plus a Lightning cable would be much nicer.

While AppRadioWorld has confirmed a working extension cable, I've purchased the cable and it does NOT work correctly. While it does not give the normal warning that it is not a supported cable, nothing functions with the cable. No Pandora, no Waze, nothing. It charges but that's about it.

I feel your pain! I have an appradio 2, which worked fine with my IPhone 4S, so I thought that I'd upgrade to an iphone 5s. My family bought me a number of Christmas presents to change the cables etc and a new Brodit car mount. This morning I tried to pre assemble some of the parts. The dock extension cable that I bought off eBay works but the male end if the cable will not fit in the Brodit mount because it too big, the Brodit is designed for a genuine Apple lightning USB cable.

So my question is: Why has Apple not released a Genuine lightning extension cable? Surely they will make money on this small accessory? Apple are starting to annoy a large number of long term customers over something so simple.

I absolutely love using my iPhone with my Pioneer Appradio, this is why I thought I'd keep with the brand and spend more money upgrading to a 5s.

ALL WE NEED IS 1 CABLE! Come on Apple, help your loyal customers out PLEASE!

There is now a working Lightning extension cable. I bought the CableJive dockXtender Lightning cable and can confirm that it works fine. Others on AppRadioWorld have confirmed it is working also. It's available through CableJive but it's cheaper and ships free on Amazon. Downside is that it's only 2ft long but it's better than nothing. If anything you could get 2 of them.

My problem is that I want to use a Brodit Iphone 5 car mount that will only accept a genuine Apple Lightning male cable . The extension cable mentioned above is fine if you are using a different mount or not a mount at all. And like i said, I have a cheap extension off eBay already that works but is too big to fit the car mount. Neither extension cable will fit because the mount that I want to use holds the cable in place so all you have to do is slide your iphone in to it and it plugs in automatically.

Hence why I don't understand that Apple have not released a genuine lightning female to lightning male extender.

Apple has never offered an extension for the Dock connector or Lightning. I'd say a 0% chance of them ever doing so.

Why can't you just get a USB extension cable for the Brodit? They're everywhere and cheap.

To get the iphone 5/5s to work with a Pioneer Appradio 2/3 you have to use a AV digital adaptor. This allows a HDMI cable to be plugged in the back of the Appradio and a USB to lightning to be plugged in to the AV adaptor. The connection that plugs in to the iphone is only about 10cms long. Meaning it makes the dash cluttered in your car having 2 cables (HDMI & USB) coming out visibly and also having the adaptor on display. This is why Appradio users want a lightning extension, so that they can hide all the cables behind the dash and only have 1 cable visible.

As mentioned before, there are 2 cables out now that will work, happy days! My problem is that neither will work with the Brodit mount. If Apple made a genuine one, many Appradio users would be happy.

It looks like I'm going to have to modify the brand new mount to accept the cable that I have :( Which annoys me as this should not be an issue after spending nearly £500 on the Iphone and £100 on cables and mounts and then having to mod them to work.

Sounds ore like an issue that your mount maker didn't make it accept other cables when they know darn well that there are many other cables out there. I'd just like crappy cases that make it so they only accept Apple chargers when there are plenty of other licensed options out there.

Brodit make several versions of the iPhone 5 holder to take different lightning cables

I have exactly the same problem. I bought a fancy Lightning cable in Japan with an aux output in addition to a car charger plug, and the Lightning end doesn't fit through the hole in the Brodit car mount (neither the Apple cable nor the Apple 30-pin adapter version). Did you end up doing surgery on your mount? If so, how did it work out?

BTW: I even wrote to Brodit and they replied that there isn't a reasonably sized Lightning cable extender available that they can embed into the mount, so they currently have no plans to make a version with a proper passthrough (i.e. socket in the bottom, plug on the top) like the iPhone 4 version.

I've been fighting this same problem for months. I bought one of the extension cables that was said to work. (White was said to work better, so that's what I bought, even though I wanted black. I used plasti-dip to make it

black and it looks pretty good) I am using this mount:

I had to modify this to hold the extension cable slightly. The small plastic part that the cable passes through right before it goes into the phone has to be made a slightly larger oval. I used an exacto knife and just kept following the oval profile on the inside until I got it large enough to fit. The cable fits perfectly. I couldn't use the little rubber piece that clips around the base of the plug because both the cable and the plug were too big. (The cable on my extension is about the same size as the HDMI to Lightning or VGA to Lightning adapters. Nice, high quality feeling cable). So what I did instead is wrap the plug with electrical tape so that if fit snugly in the clip to hold it in place, but would still close and lock in tightly. It hasn't moved in over a month of being in place. I can undock or dock the phone and the cable doesn't move.

I don't know how the brodit mounts work, but I suspect they don't have the same ability to make the opening slightly larger.
