This happened to my iPad Pro. I think moisture got In. Was watching a movie on my iPad while I was in the kitchen and next thing everything went mute.

When I tried to change the volume the indicator thing that comes on screen kept saying “Headphones”

Tried everything suggested on here too but no luck.

Solved this by cutting a little piece of paper and rolling it to fit in the headphone jack. Poked and poked and voila!

Hope this helps.

Okay guys this is so simple. My iPod 5 had the same problem. It said I had headphones in but I didn't and the sound didn't work. I tried almost all of the suggestions on here and nothing worked. But I figured it out. All you do it go to Settings, then click Sounds, and slide that volume bar down and back up again and then it should work.

I Put headphones back in and removed them again. Sound came back. I did go to settings and switched the sound lock setting to off too but when I tried afterwards it still said headphones on volume display. Then I put headphones back in and removed them, it worked after that. I guess I will go back to settings, sound, and switch sound lock back on.

Hallelujah!!! I believe my problem was the result of slight water damage. I spent two hours trying the cotton ball trick, blowing air in, sucking air out, putting it in front of an air conditioner, resetting a dozen times....the hair dryer fixed it within a minute! I literally jumped up and down in my bathroom when I saw "headphones" change to "sound effects" on my iPad! Its a few years old so I wasn't excited to throw a couple hundred bucks at it for a dumb mistake. Now I just want to keep typing since I have a newfound love for that click click click!!! Thank you!!

Captain Prescott, you are a genius! This method worked to perfection. Thank you!!😁

If your volume icon that appears when you push volume buttons up/down indicates you have headphones in when you don't, this is the perfect solution.

Who needs fancy technical solutions when you have a thin, paper covered wire wrap! And the analogy of getting "wax outta your ear" is brilliant.
