external mac dvd not recognized

I have a first gen intel based Macbook air running OS 10.6.8 . The internal DVD is bad . I am trying to use an external DVD from gen one Macbook Air as a replacement. The disk is not recognized or powered up when I plug it in. Any suggestions?

Your post is a little confusing, You say you have a first gen macbook air, but then you say the internal dvd is bad. Do you have a first gen macbook pro? If so, the macbook air external optical drive will not work on a non mbair machine or a non-retina mbp
