older camera - imovie HD

My sister-in-law has been using a high end Sony video camera for 12 years to make videos of birds. She started with an iMac and moved to an eMac and now is looking to upgrade to a new desktop with iMovie HD. Unfortunately, her old Sony 720 camera is in the 4:3 format, rather than 16:9. Will she be able to use her old camera with the new Mac, with iMovie HD? I understand about adapters for Firewire 400 to Thunderbolt, but what will her movies look like?

As for the 4:3 format, yes it's not 16:9, but it will still look pretty good if your sister-in-law wants to continue using the Sony.

There may be a bigger issue though with iMovie HD. iMovie HD does work in ML, but it may be tricky getting it installed on the new Mac. To work on the new Mac, IM HD needs to be installed first (prior to iMovie 11). If the new Mac comes with iMovie 11 pre-installed, you may need to uninstall it and then install iMovie HD. If the new Mac does not have IM 11 installed, it should be fine.

It's somewhat complicated because the ease of install may come down to if your sister-in-law has iMovie HD 6.03 or 6.04. Read Babowa's posts in this discussion
