Updating to Mavericks from v. 10.6.8

I'm running OS X v. 10.6.8 on my macbook pro right now. In order to update to Mavericks do I need to update to Lion first? Also if I update now to Lion now, will I be able to update to Mavericks for free if it comes out in a week or two?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

There is no information about what systems will be able to upgrade to OS X Mavericks, but it looks like you will only need a Mac with the Mac App Store, so you can upgrade from OS X 10.6.8 without any problem.

OS X Mavericks is planned to be launched in fall and will include new features > http://www.apple.com/osx/preview
