the problem is that i have not imac DVDs so i must use internet hardware test.
Each Mac needs a particular version of the AHT made specifically to test its hardware. (For mid 2010 27" iMacs, you need version 3A202; if it was a 21.5" model, it would be 3A195, & so on.) There is no "universal" version, & it has nothing to do with what OS you are running, only with the hardware in your Mac. That's why you are getting the 'not supported' message when you try to use an Internet version -- only a few Macs that came without installer disks can use the Internet based version(s).
Mid 2010 iMacs came with OS X 10.6.3 or 10.6.4 installed on them, so the appropriate version of the AHT for them should be on a grey system DVD that came with them. But unless you reformatted the drive, it also should have the AHT on a hidden partition on the built-in drive. If you did not reform it, it should start up into that copy of AHT if you hold down the D key.
If you did reformat the drive (which isn't the same thing as erasing it) & in so doing removed the copy of AHT on it, you must use a system DVD made for your specific model to run AHT. If you can't find yours, you can call Apple & order a replacement system disk set.
There is no other way to get the right version.
