I am trying to repair permissions on my old 2007 iMac via the Snow leopard install cd. The time remaining text gets to 1 minute and then the bar stops moving and the cd drive starts working quite hard. That has lasted an hour now and he mouse clicks do nothing, though I can move the cursor. Should I leave it and let it work or has some sort of crash occurred?

You should only Repair Disk and not Permissions using the Install Disc.
Repairing Disk Permissions should be done using Disk Utility while booted from the current OS X version.
Problem is the finder seems to hang when I boot it up normally. Repair disk showed no problems. I will try again, maybe I didn't wait long enough.
If Repair Disk using the Install Disc reports no problems, then Eject the Install Disc and startup in Safe Mode.
