Oct 19, 2013 6:02 PM in response to Klaus1by SkGirl,Thanks for the links Klaus1, unforturnately none of those options worked for me.
From the document How to use Migration Assistant:
- On the source Mac, open System Preferences, click Sharing, and make sure there is a name in the Computer Name field.
On the old iMac there is a system folder, within that a Preferences file and then a System Preferences document. When I click on that I get this message:
'The document "System Preferences" could not be opened, because the application program that created it could ot be found."
RE: Troubleshooting Firewire target disk mode:
Target computers
These models can be used as target computers:
- iMac (Slot Loading) with Firmware version 2.4 or later
- iMac (Summer 2000) and all models introduced after July 2000
I have an original iMac (1998) with a tray loading CD ROM
Anyone else have any ideas?

Oct 21, 2013 11:26 AM in response to SkGirlby rccharles,The original iMac 233 didn't have a firewire port nor did it have a writeable cd drive.
I’ve been trying to copy files - word documents and pictures from my original Bondi Blue On the old Mac, the OS is 8.6 so a USB flash drive doesn’t work.
A flash drive should work. You should format the flash drive for Mac OS extended. There is a classic formatting program. I forget it's name. Look around. Doesn't the machine ask you to format the flash drive. What port did you use. Use a port on the side of the machine not the keyboard. The keyboard may not have enough power.
I wasn't able to get apple's share working with Mac OS X 10.4. I think Apple removed classic file sharing from 10.4.
I was able to upload files by using an FTP server. I used PureFTPd Manager 1.7 with Mac OS X 10.4. this download does include the server software. [ I never had much luck with the built in FTP server. ] I did have to create a FTP user. I had to boot the classic machine after configuring.

I used fetch on classic:

I used version 3. Previously, I used version 4.
if downloading doesn't work on classic, I downloaded on x then put the file in web sharing directory.
On X, put the file in web sharing directory. Point your classic web browser to X. You can use any classic web browser to download from Mac OS X. This is how I downloaded fetch.
