removing phone number from iMessage

How do you do this so that contacts that use iPhones can send messages to me now that I no longer have an iPhone?

iPhone 4S, iOS 7.0.2

This is the documented solution that worked for me:

"

Unlink a phone number

To remove a phone number from an Apple ID, sign out of FaceTime and Messages on your iPhone:

  • Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
  • Settings > FaceTime. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.

This should remove your phone number from other devices using the same Apple ID with FaceTime and Messages. If the phone number is still available on other devices after you sign out of FaceTime and iMessage on the iPhone, you may need to sign out of iMessage and FaceTime on all your devices, then sign in to FaceTime and Messages again on devices you want to use.

Note: If you no longer have access to the iPhone that is using the number you want to remove, reset your Apple IDpassword."

Unlinking by signing out of FaceTime and Messages (on ALL OF MY DEVICES AND MACS) seems to have worked for me. Although this should be a lot easier. IE: We should be able to manage this from iCloud on the web, or something.

And I really doubt the above instructions (about unregistering the iPhone from "My Support Profile") would have any impact on this. That's for warranty support, and I'd like to keep easy track of my products there. It makes no sense that we'd have to unregister there just to unlink our phone numbers from iMessage. Especially if a customer (like myself) still intends to keep the iPhone, just not use it as their primary messaging device. I sincerely doubt the Support Profile database is linked to iMessage's number database in any way.

Hey guys!!!

I have found a simple solution to this daunting issue! If you no longer own the device, switched to a non iOS device etc all you have to do is reset the Apple ID password associated with your phone number...bada bing bada boom! Problem solved. Here is the Apple support article associated with this incase you have any further issues.
