removing phone number from iMessage
How do you do this so that contacts that use iPhones can send messages to me now that I no longer have an iPhone?

Since you no longer have an iPhone, contacts can no longer send you iMessages. They can send text messages to your mobile non-iPhone using your mobile number.
Hopefully before you got rid of your iPhone you did Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings
Actually, they can't. I reset the phone. Went to the Apple ID support and unregistered the phone and removed the phone number from all my devices (iPad, Macbook) and they iPhone friends who once messaged me via iMessage on my old iPhone are not having messages come through to my new phone that is not an iPhone.
Are you sure you have SMS set up with your cellular carrier? Can you, for example, send text messages out from your new non-iPhone?
thats not true. imessages and facetime can still work with the correct apple-id.
Try this:
Go to: https://supportprofile.apple.com/MySupportProfile.do
Log in if not already logged in.
Click on "Edit Products"
Click on the "X" to the right of the product.
Click "Unregister"
I did that. Hopefully this will work.
tell them to send imessages to your apple-id (email). it'll come as an imessage, not an email.
same for facetime.
Thank you. I'm not trying to do that. I just recently upgraded to a Galaxy Note 3 and none of my messages from iPhone users was coming through. Apparently iMessage still has my phone number registered. I wanted to know how to unregister so I would get my messages.
oh sorry i thought u want to use the iphone as an ipod touch.
ya well if unregistering your number doesn't work...the number associated with imessages will drop off their system in a month or so.
till then (and maybe also in the future 🙂 ) use modern texting apps like whatsapp

If it doesn't work, the only thing I know to do after that is call Apple Care. So, I hope it does.
Best of luck.
I tried this solution but my phone isnt registered under my apple id so i cant unregister it. what do i do?
This is the documented solution that worked for me:
"
To remove a phone number from an Apple ID, sign out of FaceTime and Messages on your iPhone:
This should remove your phone number from other devices using the same Apple ID with FaceTime and Messages. If the phone number is still available on other devices after you sign out of FaceTime and iMessage on the iPhone, you may need to sign out of iMessage and FaceTime on all your devices, then sign in to FaceTime and Messages again on devices you want to use.
Note: If you no longer have access to the iPhone that is using the number you want to remove, reset your Apple IDpassword."
Unlinking by signing out of FaceTime and Messages (on ALL OF MY DEVICES AND MACS) seems to have worked for me. Although this should be a lot easier. IE: We should be able to manage this from iCloud on the web, or something.
And I really doubt the above instructions (about unregistering the iPhone from "My Support Profile") would have any impact on this. That's for warranty support, and I'd like to keep easy track of my products there. It makes no sense that we'd have to unregister there just to unlink our phone numbers from iMessage. Especially if a customer (like myself) still intends to keep the iPhone, just not use it as their primary messaging device. I sincerely doubt the Support Profile database is linked to iMessage's number database in any way.
Hey guys!!!
I have found a simple solution to this daunting issue! If you no longer own the device, switched to a non iOS device etc all you have to do is reset the Apple ID password associated with your phone number...bada bing bada boom! Problem solved. Here is the Apple support article associated with this incase you have any further issues.
Vodafone also has a tutorial on how to remove your phone number here. http://support.vodafone.com.au/articles/FAQ/How-to-deactivate-iMessage-if-you-re -switching-from-iPhone
