Q: Images Not Displaying After Update to Aperture 3.4.5

Hi All,

I recently restored a Time Machine backup to a new late-2013 27-inch iMac.  Aperture appeared to be working fine for the first couple of days.  It was a little clunky, but I presumed it was rebuilding thumbnails or something.

I then installed the 3.4.5 update to Aperture, and upgraded the library, as instructed.  Since then, none of my images are displaying in any of my projects or albums.  I have tried all manner of repair permissions, repair, rebuild, and even a reinstall of Aperture itself.  When I click on a project and 'Show Project Info', each project is showing the correct number of files.  However, when I go into the project (or album), nothing is displayed.  I have double checked and do not have a filter applied.

When I do start up, Aperture starts "Processing" and displays "Preparing to process images (0 remaining) (1 remaining)". It works its way through my ~150,000 images but, when finished, still no images are displayed.  Attached is an (unhelpful) partial screen shot of Aperture processing its way through my photos, against the (blank) backdrop of my 2013 Project.

Any ideas/suggestions would be much appreciated.

Graeme.

I have the same question, though only some of my projects are missing their photos.  Here's hoping there's a sane solution.

I have tried all manner of repair permissions, repair, rebuild, and even a reinstall of Aperture itself.

Is Aperture working in your user account at all? Can you create a new Aperture library for testing, import a few images, and do these show in the browser?

To create a new library, hold down the alt/options key when launching Aperture and select "other/new".

If not even a new library is working, try to trash your Aperture preferences "com.apple.Aperture.plist", if you do not already have done so:

Note:Your User Library is hidden by default in 10.7.x or later - to open it in a Finder window use the "Go" menu from the Finder's main menu bar.

    • Quit Aperture, if it is running. Log off and on again (don't skip this step!).
    • Open the user library by using the Finder's "Go > Go to Folder" menu and hold down the options-key, until "Library" appears in the drop down menu. Select it.
    • In the widow that will open, scroll down to "Preferences"
    • From the "Preferences" folder  remove "com.apple.Aperture.plist".

Then try to launch Aperture again.

But deleting the "Preferences" file will cause Aperture to forget the preferences settings. Be prepared to have to reset all options you set using the Aperture Preferences panel.

But if a new library works, post back. Then we'll have to fix your current Aperture library.

Thank you for your reply.  This is just a quick reply on my part as life has intervened (children).

I decided to make a new library, as you suggested.  I imported (copyied) all the photos from both external hard drives on which they are stored into the new Aperture library (storing everything on the HDD).  This has worked. The new library is otherwise working fine.

In the mean time, I note that when I try to switch between the old library and the new library, Aperture indicates that the old library (despite having been updated) is in an older format.  I am starting to wonder if my old library was somehow corrupted.  I used to encounter sporadic errors with it (recommendations to repair the library on opening), which would always return after a while.  I wonder if I was unlucky in doing the upgrade to 3.4.5, and did so with a library error on board.

    Thanks.

This has worked. The new library is otherwise working fine.

That is good to know. Could you save all your images this way?

, Aperture indicates that the old library (despite having been updated) is in an older format.

That cannot be, if you have been opening the library already in Aperture 3.4.5. Then something really got corrupted badly. when and where do you see this notice of the older library format?

I used to encounter sporadic errors with it (recommendations to repair the library on opening), which would always return after a while.

At which occasions, did you see the warning? I am seeing them also again and again, every time after I opened the Aperture Library in iPhoto. I woder, if there is a bug, when switching between applications.
