Help with my I-Pod Shuffle1st Generation

Hello, I have an I-Pod Shuffle 1st Generation. It is now connected to my MacBook Pro (Version 10.6.8) but my I-Tunes will no longer recognize it. I have not synced it for about a year and I have the a 3rd Generation I-Pod Shuffle and it is recognized by my MacBook Pro. The cords work on both shuffles and I have both plugged in simultaneously. But even when i have them plugged in separately, there is no recognition of the the first generation shuffle but the orange light indicates it is charging. Is there a way for my older Shuffle to be recognized by I-Tunes? I'd like to use both and a year ago both were easily recognized. Any help you may provide would be appreciated.

Thanks!

The cords work on both shuffles

The 1st gen shuffle does not use a cable (it has a built-in USB plug), so is the one you called "1st Generation" actually a 2nd gen shuffle?

NOTE: If it's a 2nd gen shuffle, and the other one is 3rd gen, they do not work using the same USB docking cable (because the connector is different). You need to use the 2nd gen shuffle with the cable it came with (or a compatible third-party replacement).

Thank you for your response. However, you are correct. I have both a 2nd generation and a 3rd generation Shuffle. I have 2 different cable connectors for each of them. When I plug the 2nd generation in, my MacBook pro does not recognize it and does not activate I-tunes at all. But it used to one year ago. And my MacBook pro does recognize my 3rd generation.

Also, I also have a 1st gen I-pad and a 3rd gen I-phone. I'm wondering if I-tunes has a limit on the number of apple products it can interface with. Or do I just have another issue going on with my 2nd gen I-pod shuffle?

Looking forward to your response and assistance.

Thanks!!

So you are using the USB cable that came with the 2nd gen shuffle (it has a mini-dock on the shuffle end), correct?

When you connect the shuffle, you said the the orange light on the shuffle comes on. Does it blink initially (or continuously)? If you connect the shuffle with iTunes NOT running, and run Disk Utility instead, does the shuffle's disk appear in Disk Utility's sidebar? You can also try running System Profiler to see if the shuffle is recognized as being connected to USB.

There is no (practical) limit to how many supported devices can connect to iTunes at the same time (or separately). There is a limit to the amount of power available on the computer's USB bus, so connecting all FOUR of your devices at the same time may be a problem. But just the shuffle by itself should certainly work.

You've probably ruled out a software-related problem on the Mac (OS and iTunes) because your other devices work fine. You've ruled out a problem with the USB port being used; I assume you have used the same port to connect both the 2nd gen shuffle and your other devices. The remaining possible causes are faulty USB cable (the one used with 2nd gen shuffle) and a problem on the shuffle itself.

When you leave a lithium-based battery fully discharged for an extended period (like one year), it can become unable to hold a charge. However, I think the shuffle would still appear in iTunes when connected.

If the shuffle is seen by the Mac (such as in Disk Utility or System Profiler), but not by iTunes, you can try using this "reset" utility.
