How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Without doing anything:

1) My iPhone did NOT show in the iTunes devices, or in iPhoto. I could not sync videos or anything from my iPhone. (Didn't try iPad)

2) Now couple of boots and sleeps later, the phone just pops up in devices and in iPhoto?

==> USB-sync works.

I don't know what the problem was, but I was ready to get angry too.. 🙂

Your point is well taken and very important considering the number of people who will think due to this ever expanding thread that they can't sync their iPhone to their Computer. Truth be known ...you can. As typical the devil is in the detail. This thread is about a subset of information on people's iPhones; and more specifically about a subset of people that use Macintosh Computers with the latest OSX Mavericks. Having said that you can Sync your iPhone with Macintosh Computers that have the latest OS X Mavericks, the latest iTunes and with iPhones that have the latest iOS 7.0.3. The people that have proliferated this Thread to so many pages care deeply about their own Control of their Data, and consequently care deeply about their ability to sync their iPhones inclusive of their Calendars and their Contacts for example without the intervention of the Internet and iCloud remote Storage.

There is nothing about those folks wants and/or needs for Control and Security surrounding their right to Privacy. It is important at the same time that iPhone Users don't misunderstand this Thread to think that they just plain can't Sync their iPhones to their Computers using their USB cable.

I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but I was posting is the server forums looking for a resource for server and this was suggested. This is an eBook on...

Using Mavricks Server at Homehttp://www.wegotserved.com/category/home-servers/

For those of you still on Mountain Lion they also have an ebook for Mountain Loin Server

Some of this discussion wouldbe better served and more answers if someone would place a well thought out post in the Servers forum on waht we are trying to accomplish... That is regain control of our data locally, not in anybody's Cloud. Tha is local syncing of Calendars and Contacts to our iDevice.

Oh, yeah, if someone does start such a thread in the Servers forum... Pleas put a link to the thread in this thread.

If I get to it today I will do that, but I am not sure I will have time.

Thanks,

Andy

This is well thought out. I really hope this is what you told Apple. The more people who directly tell Apple about their concerns for data protection and privacy issues I believe Apple will start to understand how many of us feel about our data security for both backup protection and privacy.

Yes, everyone should tell Apple like through here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html ... I am writing one right now!

Hi Boglott,

thanks for the info on OSX Server. I'm an ex Windows user so am still finding my way around the MAC. Another poster asked if OSX Server would run all the time the MAC is switched on (I'm using a Macbook Pro Retina). I have Parallels installed so that I can run Windows for some of my legacy software so could I install OSX server as another VM and just turn it on when I am doing a local sync?

p.s. Parallels also didn't work after upgrading to Maverick, found from another forum that I I needed to do a reinstall of Parallels 8 so did an upgrade to Parallels 9 instead, another £30ish, but 9 is supposedly fully compatible with Maverick.

p.p.s For various reasons I had to start using another cloud based service (I won't say which) for some trivial data shared with a few colleagues. Before I did so, I did a little research and was impressed by the security procedures they have in place so that their staff only have access to the parts of the system they need for their tasks. Then I found an entry in Wikipedia that described the same cloud service exposing clients data to anyone accessing the service, without a password, for 2 or 3 hours, following a SECURITY UPDATE on the system. And people wonder why cloud services are viewed with suspicion!

Folks, like many of you I was concerned about the lack of an option to locally back up and sync contacts...while I've complained to Apple and hope that the company listens to those of you who have done likewise, I've looked around for another solution. It seems that there is various iphone software out there that enables you to back up your contacts within that software, and also to mail yourself backup files in various formats. You can also upload to dropbox, etc.

The software I've been trying out is called Contacts Kit - it's on iTunes, both free and paid versions. I'm not quite clear on what the latter offers that the former doesn't, but the free one seems to work.

Play around with it, see what you think. It might help those of you who are looking for a solution while Apple (hopefully) rethinks this decision of removing what was a very useful function.

Just a quick summary

This thread is concerned with the removal of the "sync services" framework in the new OS X Mavericks and the effects this has had on users and with possible solutions.

Effects:

Sync services was used by iTunes to synchronize calendars, contacts, (and in the far past notes and reminders), between iOS devices and Macs, if these were not set to sync via iCloud. This sync happened during the iTunes sync over USB or local Wifi. With the removal of sync services, iTunes can no longer do this and users have to fall back to iCloud or other cloud services.

Problems:

Opinions voiced here mention the following:

  1. Don't want that private information in the Cloud for for fear of hacks and abuse
  2. Loss of control over safety of data, server errors happen (see Amazon), and Apple will hardly pay damages. If my Mac dies and I didn't back up correctly, that is my responsibility.
  3. Fear of government intrusions
  4. iPhone 3G, original iPad and iPod touch 2G do not support iCloud and are now disconnected regarding contacts and calendar
  5. Legal issues concerning EU customers when storing business/client/patient/student data on non-EU servers.
  6. On the go with Laptop and iOS, only the latter may have internet access and they can't sync.
  7. Data consumption of iCloud (it once burned through my entire 300MB plan in two weeks, before I turned it off)

Solutions:

  1. Contact Apple through http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html in the hope of getting sync services back, one can hope ;(
  2. Use an alternative cloud service (Google, etc.) for unsupported devices
  3. Set up your own server in the home network
    1. OSX Server
    2. ownCloud
    3. open source CalDAV and CardDAV servers
  4. Revert to OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion (Warning: iTunes 12 will come eventually and may not support sync services anymore)
  5. Pen and Paper
  6. give up and use iCloud
  7. Deal with it

I have 5000+ contacts in Outlook for Mac 2011 and I only need 150 of them on iPhone. And I want my new contacts created on iPhone to appear in Outlook. I use Business Card Scan App which creates a contact out of paper card, so sync between iPhone and Outlook is necessary for this workflow.

iCloud pulls all 5000 previously sync'ed contacts from the Contacts application. Of course in my casne Contacts app by now has outdated data becasue I add at least 3-5 new contacts to Outlook daily.

Before Mavericks I could use WiFi sync via iTunes where I selected group that I need to sync. Now it's all gone and I've spent hours of time to find this particular discussion and to my regret there's no answer here. Basically, what it need is vey simple per-group sync between Outlook-Contacts-iPhohe. Apple, is it really too much?

Let it be iCloud, I'm not too worried about sending info to the cloud, but it should be able to sync only selected groups/categories and we should be able to change/assign categories of the contacts created or stored on iPhone runnins iOS7.

If anyone had similar problem and found a solution, please reply! Alternatively, the only option I see now is to wait and hope for Apple update with added local sync features.
