How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

here is my report, syncing with SyncMate 5 Beta:

I synced my iPad 1, iPhone 3, iPhone 4, and iPhone 5 successfully. …. BUT, it did not function at first. I figured out, that if in Calendar or Contacts on my Mac there are other accounts active (for example remote accounts accounts like Google or ownCloud) then it poses a problem for SyncMate. I deactivated all the accounts and only left the “On My Mac” active. After that everything synced.

A little down side is the extensive time it takes to sync each time. Over 5 min.

Anyone know whether the iphone update to 7.1 has any effect on Mountain Lion syncing of contacts and calendar, don't want to screw up my current settings before Eltima has completed beta testing?

Anyone know how long testing traditionally takes?

Thanks

You mean Mavericks syncing no doubt?

I don't know and anybody who does is likely under an NDA. You'll have to google this one....

Background: last month I bought a new MacBook Pro (Mavericks installed). I used Time Machine (TM) to back up my old (Mountain Lion) Mac. I then used TM to install all my files on the new computer — without any apparent conflicts. I subsequently tried to install Bailkal Server, OS X Server and SyncMate 5 and encountered a series of problems, culminating in the loss of admin privileges in my user accounts, and being locked out of System Preferences/Users and Groups.

Apple Store: Last week I spent four hours at my local Apple Store trying to sort out the problems. (Interestingly, the staff there were not aware that local sync had been disabled for Calendar and Contacts.)

Apple trainer’s opinion: the problems probably were caused by using TM to migrate all my files. It’s likely that system conflicts were caused by software I was using with Mountain Lion.

Solution: we did a complete reinstall of Mavericks, and moved my files by hand, item by item, from TM to the computer.

Sync: I am now concentrating on trying to get Syncmate 5 to work. Calendars work fine, but not Contacts. In total, I have about 4,250, but I can only sync one group of about 350. I can’t sync any second group. Are my results in line with other peoples? Or have some people been able to sync whole, substantial Contacts files? (Of course, I’ve tried discussing this with Eltima, reporting logs etc. but there is more discussion here than on their forum.)

I absolutely hate that Apple is taking this Orwellian/Big Brother approach to OUR DATA! It is unacceptable on several levels that they made this change:

1) There was no notification, so it is their asserted unilateral right to DECREASE functionality on equipment and with processes that cost us all money and that we had come to rely on

2) There was no notification that they were going to reduce functionality so people like me could have refrained completely from the supposed "upgrade"

2) We should NOT be comp[elled to give up our contacts and calendar information, i.e. who we know and where we have been or will be to some muntinational corporation.

I have been an Apple product user (not a zealot, but a user) since the beginning. I even went to school with Jobs (what little he attended) and this is not where it was supposed to go. Guess I was naieve... Big Data scares the **** ougt of me when it is used this way.

Finally, I truly do wonder where the "upside" is for Apple? Are they truly that big that they can purport to own our personal data, track our whereabouts, and spy on us with abandon? I suppose so. Oh well, guess I'm old fashioned!

This will be the end of my use of Apple products if this is not remedied.

Anything and everything but.

In any case you are avoiding the question of personal rights... and functional continuity of products we have already paid for and invested time in.

How about a DayTimer, that would be quite retro, don't you think?
