How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Whilst I've no proof that AAPL are guilty of course,

So you are speculating, even though speculation is explicitly banned in the terms of use?

Hello Csound1 !

You are one of the best TOE-cops in the thread. Always vigilant and alert to denounce a misuse of the terms of use.

From my point of view, you missed again another opportunity to just keep quiet.

There are valuable arguments to answer to Gumsie, you used the less interesting one.

What about 1 or 2 days of … silence ?

Since local sync was removed, yes.

That is an illogical response, equivalent to saying the Indians had to be slaughtered since the soldiers left the fort anyway. Absurdity at it's finest.

It always struck me as foolish, vapid and wasteful to send signals across multifarious servers positioned on the worldwide internet and have Apple support thousands upon thousands of machines in huge air-conditioned & power-managed buildings in different parts of the country - all to sync two devices sitting less than a quarter of an inch from each other.

Don't forget a lot of this stuff is (also) simply to show other companies, shareholders and the world that Apple is just as technologically 'advanced' as competitors are etc. It's a show. They can do it, so can we. 'We have x-amount of users'. Boasting metrics and green data-centers is something a lot of people care more about than privacy unfortunately.

I find having to plug in order to sync rather antediluvian, and destructive to my workflow (which takes me around the world). All that extra travel is wasteful of time and energy.

If you calculate how much CO2 and methane would be produced by 300 million humans waiting ten minutes for itunes to churn you might find the carbon footprint of a modern data farm favourably comparable.

That's not only conjecture/speculation not allowed by these forums but wildly incorrect & illogical conjecture.

To make your argument even more obtuse and silly, you seem to be indicating that no one would be breathing for those ten minutes if only they didn't use iTunes. Quite ridiculous.

Yeah, er......not sure about that. Data centres are my field and I can tell you they waste massive amounts of energy. Truly massive amounts on necessary evils like physical and virtual security before you even begin to consider other factors.

Agreed. It's more than simply the PR of "green" data centers where operating power only is calculated.

Add up all of the energy and resources required to manufacture all the machines in those buildings; the energy for the freight required to ship from China to North Carolina; to construct and maintain the buildings; to manufacture and ship the camera equipment; to secure the software; fence and guard the perimeter; to get the employees back and forth; to build, ship, install and service the air conditioning equipment; and all the other myriad tasks needed to go from ground zero to full cloud services and the continued maintenance of those services. Massive amounts of energy consumed.

All to cover the 1/4" between those devices...
