How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

The options we have discussed are:

1. OSX server — a kind of 'sledgehammer to crack a nut' solution, if you are only going to sync Contacts and Calendars.

2. Baikal server — better scaled but lacking good documentation.

3. SyncMate 5 beta — a workable solution if you can batch your contacts in groups of less than 500 and sync them individually.

plus:

4. A future solution that the ever-watchful monitors do not allow us to mention here.

"iCloud is not an option". That what the discussion says, so by definition iCloud is off topic. I recommend ignoring the two or three individuals who have been trying (largely unsuccessfully) to disrupt the technical discussion here.

Option 1 = 179MB download, which usually downloads even files more after you install, IIRC.

Option 2 = 3.7MB download & a few thousand words of setup instructions (see the user tips).

Option 3 = unknown size? (I'm not on the beta).

Option 4 visit any Mac news site to read about how it appears to be returning to a newer OS X/ iTunes. The rumors may be untrue & Apple don't want to answer.

Capt Billy, if a sync is going to take hours I'd expect the downloads to take even longer. Sorry I don't think you have much hope until Apple fix this.

If you can find a higher speed connection you may be able to try Eltima's Syncmate beta. Failing that I would export from Calendars & Contacts apps on the Mac & try to import via email or using an app that handles local file copying. iOS should import but it will not handle merging or duplicate contacts etc - it's a one way import.

Thing is, is there any valid reason to make iCloud sync mandatory?, oh apple, you have lost all my love for you.

What if your data needs to be examined by “authorities” ? Or you are involved in a divorce or lawsuit. If you only use a wired connection to share your data this makes it more difficult for various parties to get at it.

It's a part of being "Green".

Back on topic Topsteve... You don't need even 2 mbps or 200kbps to sync contacts and calendar. I regularly update calendar on a cheap android phone using Apple icloud on 3g or Edge and my wife's phone picks it up in minutes. Anything ove a meg is purely for the video market.

Ziatron, 128 bit encryption transmission and servers will always be the most secure part of your data storage, the least secure being the ex wife finding your phone.

So you prefer USB sync because it helps you to avoid compliance with lawful requests for information?

The law and courts were able to act, before apple made the cloud mandetory, and even before before day timer planners existed. I don't think he was saying that he wanted to avoid lawful requests for information, but instead he was saying that he finds the cloud a little bit oppressing. It is a new technology, and will of course be abused by authorities and the government some. Simply just accepting any and all changes is not always the brightest course of action. Only opposition can bring about change. I understand his fear, and have some myself. I do understand that I will have to self monitor more, the data I enter into our phone. Much like the Internet, everything is becoming both more excessible. Unfortunately wt more accesibility, comes a greater lack of privacy.

Hi All,

Thanks for all the thoughts and efforts. I was able to go into town and find an internet connection that allowed my to sync my contacts in less than an hour. Not too bad for the third world!! Keep pushing for a wired sync. I am going to sign off the thread so my mailbox is not filled with all of your messages... that take time too! and energy on my energy starved boat! Cheers and thanks,

Bill

Absolutely, lawful requests must be honoured, whether it is in the cloud or on a laptop, but I suspect Greenmind was concerned about general security when he said "Much like the Internet, everything is becoming both more excessible. Unfortunately wt more accesibility, comes a greater lack of privacy."

This thread is the poster boy for why Apple discussion boards cannot be used to support or oppose claims and issues. Over 330,00 views and 232 pages but after about the first ten pages or so this thread degenerated into name calling, ad hominem attacks, pontificating nonsense, one-up-manship, etc. This thread has now become an entertainment forum with people tuning in for the next set of name calling, posturing, mud slinging, and claims of user support for the issue at hand.

In the future, when someone starts spouting off about how many pages a thread is long and how it "proves" the issue is widespread or of major interest please think about this thread and others like it. The same intransigent, my-way-or-the-highway numbskulls talking past each other, puffing out their chests in outrage and indignation, spewing ever more nonsense.

In other words, ignore threads like this. They say nothing about any problem or its prevalence.
