Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Well ok. Downgrade to 10.8 or OS X Server seems to be the options. Looks like a refurb MB Air would have been a better purchase than a new iPad.

Thanks for your time on this. It's appreciated.

    sdb2013,

That won't help you. All it does is transfer files between devices running the same app on all devices. There are dozens of such apps available for iOS and Macs. It won't sync contacts and calendars with the native contact and calendar apps.

That's too bad ... sounds like DiskAid ... limited file transfer only.

    Thank you for the feedback.

If a temporary downgrade to OSX 10.8.x is feasible in your circumstances, you can wait and hope that SyncMate 5 comes thru: http://blog.eltima.com/2013/11/syncmate-5-is-coming-this-winter.html

I am waiting this mess out … and hoping …

Don't hold your breath. I think Windows-people have infiltrated Apple because this is soo stupid.

This is what I'm looking for. My new iPad is useless to me right now. Mavericks is running fine on my iMac, other than this. The app developers I've contacted on this have all been great about responding... they just don't have a solution now. If Eltima can offer us a timeframe, I'll make the decision. If it's extended,  it would probably be OS X Server with the hope that there will be no issues requiring yet more learning curve time that I don't have. I need plug and play.

I know how to wipe and re-install the prior OS, apps and files. It's just a massive hassle. I did get something for nothing in my OS upgrade... a headache.

Thank you much for the link. I'll explore this.

I recently read an article in xbitlabs describing a possible Win10  future.

This will show the ya-sayers their possible future election.

And for steady learning that kind of future, we already get pieces of such,  as for example cut local sync.

It seems like the post by the user "Ryks" got deleted by the Bad Fruit Company, like most others who question A.'s policy. Luckily I still get emails about new posts, so I decided to sign his petition.

    Unfortunately I got this message:

Nous n'avons pas pu trouver la page que vous recherchez.

So where's the petion gone? Does A. have its filthy fingers in the pie here as well?

Nothing to do with questioning anything.

well, Chris is right. and I must say I haven't taken the time to read these conditions before posting my first message.

Okay, I apologise, but at the same time I'm angry with what used to be the coolest computer/Software manufacture.

How can I let them know they did something terribly wrong?

and yes, the link is still valid, but, well, 'I cann't post it here can I?

    Cheers,

Why do you use Apple? All you have done here is whinge about them, accuse them of everything you can think of and demean their software and hardware direction. Yet you still choose to use their products? I don't understand where you are coming from. Why not use the alternative.......Windows.

    Cheers

Pete, you ask me : why do I use Apple products ?

Of course I can not speak for everybody, just for me.

(Even if you seem to think, that all those who critic a decision made in Cupertino are a homogenous block and think all the same).

Here are my reasons to choose Apple-products : because they simply work better. because integration of soft- and hardware allows to give the best user-experience, to be more coherent, more ergonomic, more elegant.

All my company is running on macs (> 30 actually), since a lot of time (it began with the Mac LC) and never I had a regret about it.

Never - until the last version of Pages. I use Pages everyday, and I convinced more than the half of my co-workers to do so, too. But I didn't upgrade to the new Pages, because an upgrade which makes me loose important fonctions is a step back and not really an upgrade. So it is "not an option".

And now, just some weeks later, I have the same problem with Maverick : I can not use the new OS despite all its advantages without loosing the real comfort of easy and safe local synchronization of Iphone and Ipads.

When the first Iphone comed out, I offered one to all the managers of my company. One reason (not the only) was that the iphone  allows us to agree easily about meetings, because everybody has his or her updated calendar in the pocket.

For different reasons which are all well explained in this threat, I don't wont to sync agenda and adressbook in the cloud (not with Apple nor Google nor anybody) and I don't wont my co-workers do so with the company-data. Local sync is just perfect for us.

Now, Pete, tell me what I shall do.

No, Windows is not an option, surely not.

    I see just 2 options :

    a) I can pray and ask Apple to correct its error (now, not "whinge" like you write. Do you really think that insulting me will reinforce your argumentation ?).

    b) I can wait that a third-party developper finds a solution (Syncmate from Eltima ? Perhaps tomorrow a kickstarter-project ?).

If you can give me a better solution, I would like to know it.

    Cheers

    JU

PS : do you really think that all those who dare to have a critical idea about Apples politics should choose Windows ? Aren’t you a little bit sectarian ?

No, I did not ask you anything. Check the top of my post to see who I was replying to. I see nothing of sense in your posts to reply to you.

    Dear Pete,

even though your message was not addressed to me, it gives me a very good pretext to explain why I like, or liked Apple products, especially in the hope that some guys from Apple are reading this thread.

I'm blind you see; and with voice-over, (the built-in screen reader included in iOS/OSX), the iPhone/MacBook combination has helped me a lot in my everyday life, and is the solution I have recommended to many visually impaired friends around me.

why am I so angry at them for having removed local syncing between iOS devices andMavericks ?

    1. this is an invasion to privacy.

    2. If iCloud goes down for any imaginable or unimaginable reason, and I need to restore my iPhone precisely at this very moment, what happens ?

3, Our Personal information can fall in the hands of hackers, dictators, advertisers, and so on, and I don't want this.

and 4, I don't want to use any cloud service whatsoever, especially when I'm forced to.

as far as sending a request to Apple feedback, I did so, but I wonder how many thousands requests of the same kind they must receive before they start actually caring about them.

    Best regards
