Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Has anyone found an alternative?  Apple's Mavericks for me is like the Microsoft Vista.  I switched from all microsoft products after experiencing Vista.  Apple's removing a long time, standard feature for sycing calendar and contacts via iTunes WITHOUT notification when upgrading your OS is unacceptable.

Not much left after you abandon Microsoft and Apple.

    Maybe a nice Linux machine?

    DisappCustom,

The ONLY alternatives I found was to downgrade back to 10.8.5 after about a week.

In addition, add your voice to those providing feedback to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html.

      aps.

Try the options suggested in this and other similar threads. They have helped others with their issues.

    Cheers

    Alternatives?

The alternative I chose was reverting to 10.8.5.  This was simply to retain USB cabled sync in the absence of any LAN.

There are also other posted alternatives that have been posted that use a local network as opposed to a public network.

There are also other posted alternatives that use the public network and private clouds.

There have been no proposed Mavericks alternatives that use the USB cable to sync contacts and calendars with iTunes.

Your experience may differ, but the only painful part for me reverting to Mountain Lion was that I had already permitted the new iPhoto app to "update" my Library, which results in a library that the previous version of iPhoto cannot open.

I upgraded both to iOS 7 and Maverick( My mail.app is running at between 105 and 240% for the 3 week in a row now ) and when it comes to syncing my iPhone with my MBA I'm now in some kind of Android realm?!?

We feel your pain. We bought a boatload of Apple crapola to use in the field because of the way it worked.

Then they went out and changed the way it worked.

That's plainly incorrect and certainly in poor taste, a trademark of yours apparently.

We service many remote government installations across New Mexico, Utah, Colorado and Wyoming. Out in the middle of nowhere, not even a cell signal. Internet connectivity is highly rare. Most of the time, it's 200 miles to the nearest gas station. Last week, I spent nearly 3 hours driving well over 70mph before I saw another car.

Local sync allowed our technicians to get newly generated contacts and updated appointments for the rest of week across all of their systems.

We object to change in the functionality of the tens of thousands of dollars of equipment we procured because of the way it worked... or used to work, anyway.

We object to the poor functionality, unreliable nature and bugs in iCloud.

And we object to Apple supporting Windows users while deprecating Apple users.

There are many Apple customers out there struggling with this unannounced, surprising change - this discussion is filled with them - and they're looking for alternatives. You have nothing to offer except your snotty slams of these folks. It makes no logical sense. Have you nothing else to do?

There are always a few unhappy customers with changes in any OSX. Just look back to when 10.8 10.7 10.6 10.5 10.4 etc. were released. According to few users, all were unusable and the downfall of Apple as we knew it. Now we are up to 10.9 and the same old traits continue. This time it is with a few users not happy about the iCloud direction (over 320 million other iCloud users have not posted, so don't talk yourself into assuming that  troubleshooting forums are representative of the majority)

As for looking for alternatives, they have been given many times here.

    Cheers

    Pete

When you say that your techs got to sync with a cable prior to going to the land of no internet, where were they when they plugged in?

These instructions apply only if you use OS X v.10.8.5 or earlier. If you use OS X Mavericks v.10.9 or later, your contacts, calendars, and other info are updated on your computers and iOS devices via iCloud. For more information, see iCloud Help at icloud.com.

Csound 1: in response to the message that you sent to me, please note

I am not a spammer nor am I trolling.  I hit reply to messages and happened to reply the same thing to different people.   As a new forum user, I was under the impression that replying to an individual's post would go to the individual.  Sorry if I offended or annoyed anybody. As for the bad link to Apple Feedback, it inadvertedly occured when I reposted my Facebook post where the link looked clean and I didn't know it would bring you to FB and not the clearly labeled Apple.com/feedback/iPhone link that I posted here.  My intent is to get as many folks as possible to use the feedback method that Apple prefers so that the manual sync problem can be resolved.

According to Apple Communities Support Staff, my message was taken down AND my question to the community was removed NOT because I've repeatedly replied to individual posters but because: "Recently you posted a poll or petition in Apple Support Communities. We are including a copy of your message at the end of this email for your reference. We understand the desire to share experiences in your topic, "Re: How to sync an iPhone with an iMac, on Maverick? ," but because these posts are not allowed on our forums, we have removed it."

Since when is reiterating what Apple's Executive Customer Service told me (engineers will only fix the manually sync option that has been removed with upgrade to Mavericks when there are enough complaints / feedback to catch their attention) considered a poll or a petition?? Just because I asked that my message be shared? Seems to me that perhaps the handlers don't want an influx of feedback on this topic.

This forum is lovely but  this is a circular conversation and nothing will change until Apple gets the message loud and clear through the iPhone feedback website.  Exec Service said to select the feedback category Design and Ease of Use so that an abundance of the same complaint could be readily tallied. This needs to go viral.
