Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

I just temporarely set up my contact syncing with FileMaker Pro 13 (on the Mac) and FilerMaker Go (on the iOS devices). Once you have created a database with FileMaker Pro on your Mac, then you're all set. Beautyful Contact app for the iPad and iPhone!

I think its a good approach. But my attempt with Barney did not work. And if it doesn't work, then its not easy to find the bug (-:

    Thanks

    David

What errors did you get and at what point?

Which directory are you in when you run the commands. It assumes your home, so if you are somewhere that it cannot write the .rnd file, then it will fail for that reason: Why do I get an "unable to write 'random state'" error message?

... you are very kind. Thanks for your patience.

I will redo step by step and let you know.

(would be fantastic if I can make this work)

I strongly agree, that is it not acceptable to remove the simple sync feature via cable in iTunes! iCloud cannot be the solution in the face of the NSA activities!

I agree about the continuing need for local sync (without using internet and iCloud) and for other reasons than NSA.

Cable based sync was very easy to do, and I hope people will keep posting on Apple's feedback page, and maybe the company will do something about it.

In the meantime local wifi sync without additional expense, without iCloud or other cloudbased services, and without a pre-existing wifi network is possible.

    Hello Barney-15E

I'm in the process of retrying to configure the Baikal...

I'm at the point where  the Self-signed Certificate is supposed to be created.

    Create Self-signed SSL Certificates

A self-signed certificate will be sufficient for this server as it will only be accessed by you. It will be valid for 365 days. You can repeat these steps to create a new one each year.

    1. Run the following commands in this order in Terminal:
    2. openssl genrsa -des3 -passout pass:x -out server.pass.key 2048
    3. openssl rsa -passin pass:x -in server.pass.key -out server.key
    4. rm server.pass.key
    5. openssl req -new -key server.key -out server.csr

After entering the first command Line, in Terminal, I get the error:

    unable to write 'random state'

    e is 65537 (0x10001)

I edited my previous reply. Can you answer these questions:

Which directory are you in when you run the commands. It assumes your home, so if you are somewhere that it cannot write the .rnd file, then it will fail for that reason: Why do I get an "unable to write 'random state'" error message?

... yes, I guess you're right. it actually continues with the name of my Computer:

    unable to write 'random state'

    e is 65537 (0x10001)

    [David-Dimitris-Computer-4:~] david%

... except, that my computer is called David-Dimitris-Computer 2    and not 4 .

I don't know if that's the issue. I must have done that, but can't remember when and where.

I'm not quite sure if I understand about directory. I'm in administration mode, is this make sense?

...an option would be TeamViewer. You probably would understan better, sitting in front of my monitor.

    Sorry, directory = folder

And, not, that doesn't make sense to me.

You can set your computer name in the Sharing System Preferences. The difference in hostname vs computer name is not important, as far as I know.

    At the prompt, type

    ls -al ~/

See if a file named .rnd shows up and it has your username next to it, like this:

    -rw-------   1 Barney  staff     1024 Dec  5 06:55 .rnd

... yes, I found the file name .rnd

    it looks like this:

    -rw-------    1 root   admin      1024 Apr  5  2010 .rnd

interesting, that it's called root and not david

When you say you were running in "administration" mode, what exactly do you mean?

It looks like you ran the command as root and it created the .rnd file as root. Did you use sudo with those commands? You weren't supposed to.

You can remove the file with:

    sudo rm ~/.rnd

Then, try running the commands again.
