Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

Would you believe it. Made the same mistake too. Upgraded without looking at the reports coming in. Calendar is knackered too.

Please rant if you must but also leave feedback, this thread is already 101 pages long, the longer the better maybe?

Not really the longer the better because (1) AIUI Apple don't read what's on the forum except for the purposes of moderation, and (2) the rants (and replies to them) tend to obscure the fact that a workaround is available which enables iPhone to be synced to Mac via wifi without internet access and even without a pre-existing wifi network: https://discussions.apple.com/message/24047342#24047342

    Best wishes James

True, but when a company is as big as Apple, are you saying that it has no responsibility to it's customers and that we have no responsibility to Apple?

Besides general product liability, a company has ho responsibility to the customers. It only has a responsibility to its shareholders. If its policies cause a loss of customers, thus hurting the shareholders, then it will consider altering its policies.

I might run ML in a VM using Parallels for now should the license permit.

Apple have more than likely made a business decision and I'll probably never sit on the board so won't ever understand it fully.

For me though it's a backward step.

Unless they change it I'll have to go and look for a third party solution. This means that the only time I'll open iTunes and sync is when my apps change or if I just want to do a backup. I'll be opening Busycal for example.

It also means that I'll have less reason to buy from the Appstore as my exposure to it will be much less - I'll spend less time looking at the store home page, it'll not even be  something I click by accident as I'll not even be in the app.

Any business that has a policy of not syncing remotely to iCloud or similar has just pushed iDevices out of their workplaces.

    Hi Barney,

I have down load your Tip but am stuck!!  I thought I was pretty competent on a computer prior to trying the Tip but got no where.

I am desparate to get Calanders and Contacts up and running, especially during this busy holiday season.  To may things going on and to many family memebers to get to differnt places.  And to top it off I have my kids on old iPhone 3 that do not have the capability of using anything else but manual sync.

    Help, please :-(

I am not confident enough to do your:

'Hosting your own CalDav and CardDav server using Baikal Server https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6311

So I guess I am not as computer savy as I thought.  Truely it is beyond me.  But your help is truely appreciatted.

Do you have a video that I can watch to see how to do the above?

Is there an app that has been developed that I can use.

    Thanks.

For those of you that want to use OS X Server to solve part of the problem, the following online guide might be helpful: arstechnica.com - A power user’s guide to OS X Server, Mavericks edition - it's a general, not specific guide to the topic discussed here -

I'm available here, but that's about it. I've worked a few people through it on this thread and some others, so I think we can make it work via these forums, which should also help others.

I'm normally pretty available here in the evenings CST, and on most weekends all day if we need to work a time to get together,  here.

    Hi Barney,

Thanks for your reply.  I guess I am very nervous.

I have down loaded the zipp file but get to 'Move the Baïkal server folder to the WebServer folder.'

but do not know where that is.

Not sure what you mean by Terminal either.

Sorry, I feel so dim witted this evening doing this.

Ok, the steps tell you where to move it, but they use a unix notation for the path. The sub-steps of 3. explain what to do, and you can choose either method a. or method b.

/Library/WebServer/Documents is your web server folder. It is the Documents folder that is in the WebServer folder that is in the main Library folder at the root of your hard drive.

You can use the Terminal to do a lot of the commands, and you will need it for some, but you don't have to use it here. The Terminal is a program that gives you access to the unix underpinnings of OS X. It is inside the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder.

Where it gives you an option, there are steps to use the Terminal (3.a.), or the GUI in OS X (3.b.). In this step, you can copy the entire line under 3.a. and paste it into the Terminal. Or, you can drag the folder from Downloads into the /Library/WebServer/Documents folder.

However, first you must expand the downloaded zip file by double-clicking it.

Ok so I took a deep breath and gave it a try.  I got all the way through to

    Initialize the Server

    1. Set the Time Zone and create an Admin password, then Save Changes.
    2. Leave the default database settings and click Save Changes.
    3. Click Start using Baïkal.

and then it said admin and asked for a password.  I put in my usual admin password but it said it was wrong so silly me I closed the window.  Now I am getting

    Baïkal is running allright.

    I can not get to

    Add Users

    1. You should be on the Dashboard. Click the Users and resources link at the top of the page.
    2. Click the +Add user button
    3. Fill in the info and click Save changes
    4. Add additional users as desired.

or beyond.  What do I do :-(  and it was all going so well.

Where is the dash board.  Or how do I get back to the right place.

    Go to https://localhost:8443/admin

When it is asking for a password, it is the one you used when you ran the initial install screen in the Baikal server setup.
