Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

especially in the USA, where, for example the NSA can access that hard drive any time. The best is to keep that information in your own home. Google is just the same thing as iCloud.

The NSA can access your data in any country, not just the USA

    snozdop: sorry, you're so wrong.

You can indeed cancel, as in delete,  an iCloud account AND according to Apple Executive Customer Service, that is the ONLY way that you can remove your Contacts from the iCloud server.  The contacts remain even if you opt out of syncing through iCloud.  Believe me, I was very clear with Apple about this point because I was willing to sync with iCloud IF I could instantly remove any trace of my Contacts after syncing.

As for being forced to use iCloud, the point is NOT to use internet-based syncing service iCloud or otherwise.  This thread is about the desire to MANUALLY sync.  And when the manual sync option was removed with Mavericks upgrade, the only way to sync is thru iCloud.  When choice is removed, then we are forced to sync with iCloud thru Mavericks or not to sync at all.  Yes, I know about the cumbersome workarounds and that's not the point when discussing the concept of force vs choice.

While you might believe that Apple moved away from Sync Services 2 years ago, you are dead wrong.  Sync Services existed until the Mavericks upgrade since we were able to manually sync until that point.  Hence, the moving away from Sync Services statement is accurate.

SyncServices were deprecated in Lion, 2 years ago. Developers have had all that time to prepare an alternative, that they have not done so is a clue to how small the demand for it actually is.

Nonsense, you can delete them whenever you want, regardless of whether you 'delete' the account or not.

Let me remind you that whether or not you are happy with iCloud is not the issue.  The issue remains on the title of this thread-- iCloud is not an option.  Therefore, the server workaround is a potential solution for some stout souls and a total annoyance to lovers of the convenience and choice that Apple once offered us. So if there is a way to get Apple to sit up and take notice, preferrably with a Mavericks update that reinstates the manual sync OPTION (understand: we want choice, we want control, we want to manage our data as we choose when and how we choose -- a more than reasonable concept) then for goodness sake, lets do it. Who is this hurting?

Carrying a server around is also the Apple solution to 'local' syncing.

So iCloud suits you, that's great. Tell it to the people who are legally not a allowed to use it.

If you don't carry your laptop around, how would you sync it with a cable?

That's the point you keep overlooking. Some people do carry a laptop & an iOS device. Local syncing is helpful in that case. We used to have a choice, now we don't.

Then put the CalDAV and CardDAV server on that laptop.

A "server" doesn't have to be a dedicated box in a rack in climate controlled room.

I'm with "Apple" products for 30 years now and they made their products and system attractive to me because, amongst others, of local syncing. Nowhere did it ever say that they will take it away. No warning nothing. Gone over night. What iCloud is concerned, that is e very good functioning service, no doubt about it. But, where it becomes problematic for me personally is, when I suddenly don't have the choice any more. When for many years I was orienting my computing and communication equipment based on being able to choose. iCloud is not bad, but the freedom of choice has been taken away. There is only the option of Cloud left. No more local syncing. A choice that was of great value!

Here is one article about it from 2011, there are many others (google will find them for you) it was announced, you were not taking notice.

More to the point it was also announced to the developer community who have now had almost 3 years to develop an alternative. Developers develop in response to demand, they are in it for the money. So far there has not been enough demand to entice them to supply an alternative.

I agree with feinmeister 200%. Yes, what about syncing without internet access???

80% of my work takes place in remote areas, meetings in countries where there is no internet.....

a Server on the laptop would truly be a good thing. Only problem, it's not that simple. Still looking for how to achieve this task. (am using a MacBook)

since I'm not a computer expert I attempted to instal Baikal Server with the Apple Server installed. Nothing works. Not the Baikal Server and not the Apple Server, and no one seems to really know a simple and easy way (-:
