Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Outlook allows connection to Internet calendars and show an example address of  webcal://www.example.com/calendars/calendar.ics.

I don't know. From what I have read here, I didn't think Outlook supported CalDAV, but I have never investigated it myself.

I totally agree with this post and with many others that believe it's unacceptable we can't sync private information locally on Mavericks any longer, but are forced to upload it to Apple's Cloud instead. I refuse to be bullied into giving up my right to privacy. Apple’s greed in gathering personal information is becoming irritating.

As many of you, I innocently upgraded to Mavericks, not knowing the huge privacy issues implied in the upgrade. Apple never informed users appropriately. Such a gigantic loss in functionality and privacy should have been clearly spelled out in the upgrade specs.

I’m terribly disappointed with the brand. A hard thing to say because all my devices are Apple.

    So what to do?

Return to the paper agenda like in the good old days?

Or gather all info on just one device? Or not sync?

Has somebody come up with an app that bypasses Apple’s Orwellian move and allows us to sync locally, as we did before?

A final note. Many users don’t care about privacy. Many don’t even question the right to protect personal information. They are happy to supply their private information to corporations. I wonder why. Ignorance? Laziness? Naiveness? Or sheer complacency?

If you think your 'personal information' is safe just because you're not using iCloud, then it is you who is seriously naive.

Both mail and texts. Syncing contacts and calendar between iPhone and MBP is the thing that can't be locally done now.

Your iCloud information is no less secure than your email and text data that you use frequently. You talk of privacy and security and yet send emails? Post text messages? Do you know the security risks involved with them? 320

    Million people are using iCloud.

So complain to Apple. Make sure your line is secure first.

    Cheers

Although, like you, I regret the loss of USB syncing, it is still possible to sync contacts and calendars without using iCloud or any other cloud based service. I'm posting from my phone and can't do links, but look for Barney-15E's User Tip linked upthread. I have also posted about how to adapt calendars for a different way of syncing locally, either via your home network or through an ad hoc network created between your computer and your phone. Also please use Apple's feedback page for your comments (under Mavericks/Ease of use) as they don't read these user to user technical forums except for the purposes of moderation. I hope this is some help. James

Outlook for Windows supports CalDav (and CardDav). Outlook for Mac supports neither!

You give that up that right everytime you connect to the internet,

make a phone call, send an email, send a text, use your credit card, etc.

If you really have a fear of your privacy being invaded, you better

notify everyone that you know and communicate with that they are

not permitted to use any cloud services of any sort as well, since any

information they have on you may be comprimised.

I agree, certain western Government Departments have admtted that they intercept traffic such as texts, calls, emails and internet page calls.  They don't need to look in your icloud data.

They have done so quite often by tapping the atlantic cable nodes (allegedly)

Commercial companies buy and sell your internet traffic on a daily basis.

icloud will not make you more exposed, but many local alternatives have been posted in this thread.

I am incensed as anyone about this (and other) erosions of my personal privacy. For Apples part, this is my last Apple product until and unless local sync functionality is restored. As it stands now, I no longer have any email accounts on my iphone, calendar sync is very limited, and I now manually duplicate, or delete (as appropriate) all contact information between my MBP and my iPad/iPhone. Tedious? Yes. But at least I don't have to do it too often...

Apple used to be about ease of use and personal choice. It has no advantage just because its products look pretty. Form over function has never, and will never, cut it in my world. If Apple continues to make products that do not "simply work", then I'll find other products that do, or I am quite prepared to "do without". My iPhone contract ends in Aug 14. There will be no upgrade to an iPhone 5 anything. And maybe Apple does not care...after al, as of this writing,l they appear to now have access into China. So perhaps it just became all about the money and only appearing to make "insanely great products" that "work" only if you surrender your privacy.

I hope someone at Apple is listening, and listening very very hard. Apple will do what it thinks it must...but so will I.

No, they are not listening here.

Try them at the proper feedback channel

Mavericks is very nice. So is ML. That's what I went back to.

A third party solution may appear or Apple may return the feature although given the OSX server work around I doubt it.

Apple do take notice of posts here, even if it's indirect. It's a ridiculous notion to think that posting here is wasted. It may be more effective to post at the feedback page as noted above admittedly, (have you yet - if not please do so), but share valid opinions here too.
