Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

 

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

    Cool, gonna see if my review is on there.

     

    Yep, it's there. Have srted the reviews by most recent and there seems to be more negative ones, (though iTunes isn't mentioned in most of them).

    Within the next one or two years I won't be forced to upgrade to OS 10.9. But the day will come Apple will  finish the support of older OS versions. And than I would be forced to sync via iCloud. But I'll switch to an alternative system (as a Mac user since twenty years) before that date. Do you remember Apple's 1984 commercial?

    Other cloud-based services are available, of course. But if you, like me, don't wish to use iCloud or any other cloud-based service, Barney-15 E's User Tip linked to in various places on this thread offers a workaround which enables you to do wireless syncing direct between your Mac and your iPhone.     I don't even remember 1984! There are not many alternative systems from OSX so choose wisely.

    Anyway Daus55, you say that now, but everyone knows once you have had Mac, there's no going back.

    I'm in the same boat. While my company will be moving all of our OS X based work machines over to Windows 8 units, I still get to keep my 27" iMac & 13" MacBook Air at home. It's all about the local sync support.

     

    I do wish Apple had not made this move, I can't imagine Steve supporting Microsoft while deprecating the Macintosh.

     

    It was iTunes that made the iPod and every follow-on iDevice hum. To let that firm market grip go in favor of a system that Apple has never been very good at could turn out to be a huge strategic blunder.

    iCloud has 320,000,000 users, I think Apple avoided the 'blunder' already.

    I'm quite sure there are iCloud users that don't upload their Contacts and calendars etc. I for one only use Mail, Find my Mac and Find my Friends.

    How has that 320,000,000 total changed since the advent of Mavericks? I'm pretty sure that none of us know which would suggest you have no idea whether this is a blunder or not which puts your statement somewhere between a guess and a lie.

    Seen that ages ago. Now let's get something straight. I didn't call you a liar. You took that ttile upon yourself. I said your post, (Apple has already avoided a Blunder), was somewhere between a guess and a lie.

    Of those people that signed up for iCloud how many did it not really knowing what the full package was, (I'd suggest the vast majority), and how many thought great I need this so that I can get access to the iTunes store on my new iDevice, (quite a few maybe), etc etc...

     

    Now this is a fact;

    Neither you or I know if this move to go all cloud is a strategic blunder for Apple but choice has been removed from the user.

     

    Companies change their offerings all the time and that's fine, we need to decide if it fits us or move on. This thread is about how to locally sync your contacts and calendars.

    You seem to be offering nothing except posts along the lines of, 'don't let the door hit you in the behind on your way out'. Great, you've maybe said it at least 320,000,000 times. If that's all you have to offer then why post unless something is addressed to you as you are not really helping are you?

     

    There are some people who'd like things the old way, let them be. Sooner or later Apple will remove something you need/like. Remember that.

    Why don't you find out, or do you expect others to do your research for you usually?

    Deal with what I have posted, do not assume.

    If you are saying I called you stupid then I would suggest that you are.

     

    As for your second point, a lot of the people I know, most in fact have an iCloud account that they don't use for its cloud facilities but mainly for iTunes store purchases and some email. They then realise they don't need it and become annoyed that they can't merge two Apple IDs. That's the extent of my research, that and what's posted on this forum.

     

    As to the last bit. Another next to useless post. You've had some good input to the Apple Support Community it's just that very little of it appears in this thread.

    Again I call you out. Other than, 'Have a nice day', 'Enjoy Windows', 'Take it or leave it', and that kind of post, you've not really offered much have you?

     

    Anyway, this argument is getting this thread nowhere, so I'll have a nice day, and bid you the same.

    How many millions of people do you know who do this, I'll deduct them from the total.

     

    FYI, an iCloud account and an iTunes account are separate things, you do not need an iCloud account at all to use iTunes (look it up)

    This thread has become one of the most pointless threads.

     

    It started out as people looking to see what happened to the local syncing between iOS devices and their Mac's.

     

    We then, collectively, learned that this capability was removed by Apple to be replaced by syncing via iCloud.

     

    Then, some started whining.  To be expected.

     

    Otheres started to enumerate reasons that iCloud would not be a good option for them.

     

    Still others took the position that these people should get used to it.  A subset belittled those unhappy with the iCloud approach with some name calling, etc.; overall, the lack of empathy for those with legitimate positions (at least from their own point of view) is astounding.

     

    Let's just agree to disagree and hope that Apple adjusts their products to support both models, keeping all the camps happy, as they should have in the first place.

     

    The technology implementation is capable of evolving and adjusting to people - without clear benefit, it should not be the other way around....
